My grandfather was a VERY special part of my childhood. He passed away of lung cancer on Christmas Eve when I was 11 years old. It was a difficult time for me. This was my poem I wrote to him when I was 16 years old.

I was young when you died, the day before Christmas in '85.

I knew you were in pain each time we visited the hospital.

It was killing me to realize each time I saw you might have been my very last.

How I longed for you to get better, but deep down I guess I really knew it was a fantasy world I wanted to live in.

All those precious hours you spent teaching me gin...you'd be proud to know I can finally win.

We did so much together - just you and me.

I will never forget our walks to Dixie Lee to get lady fingers to have with tea.

Or our trips to Keansburg Beach where we would build castles in the sand, watching the seagulls above the land.

My memories of us are as clear as day, just like yesterday.

Although I was to little to know you well, I really loved you and I hoped you could tell.

Some used to call you Reggie Jackson as if you were their hero.

In my eyes you were more than a hero, you were you.

As I grew up you guided me.

When I was falling, you'd catch me.

When I needed you, you were there by my side.

I will always remember you as outgoing because that love you had kept right on flowing.

I saw a star twinkle just the other night.

It was as if you sent a message saying everything is alright.

I wish I could turn back the hands of time, but one day we will be together again.

I am constantly asking why you had to go, but never get an answer.

Maybe one day, some day, I will.

Just always remember how much I love you.

Until we meet again at another place in another time, you will always be in my heart and on my mind.
