The shadows overcome me, swallow me whole.
They sweep me under like a tidal wave, grabbing at my soul.
I can no longer be seen, but since when is that new.
Old friends walk by, laughing, among their new crew.
The shadows change me, begin to morph my heart,
Turn my compassion black, leave my mouth bitter and tart.
I yearn for being seen, being loved and cared for, too,
But the shadows are transforming me, yet no one has a clue.
I have become shadowed, until the end of time,
Shadowed I am forever, out of the shadows I cannot climb.
Come meet me in the shadows, for now they’re all I know
Come closer, I have something I need to show
Among these shadows are all that have been turned away
For being different, awkward, fat, or gay
These shadows are so dark; they’ve changed us all in here,
Where once joy and optimism, there is now anger and fear.
So next time you aim to hurt, remember what you’ve seen,
In the shadows, love is gone, all because the world was cruel and mean.
