The radio flicker

on and off --

electric in the air.

News of war and hate

is breathed into our lungs,

static in our blood,

writhing just underneath

our skin.

Sullen eyes and empty hearts,

ravaged homes,

gun shots in the distance.

Hiding under floorboards --

hiding from the demons

that pillage the countryside

that I was once proud

to call home.

Soulless eyes, so blood-thirsty,

men that have grown so cold,

men that we once called friends,

soldiers that we used to know,

become monsters

as they march to the beat

of their broken hearts.
