Progress

I look at the world today

And what do I see?

Pain and anger and misery

Shouting out at me

Were we ever happy

With our place here on Earth

Progress shout the experts

This counts our worth

How I long for an easy life

When all I had was a TV

And a husband who came home

Every night to his wife

A Computer, A DVD

A holiday in the sun

Progress shout the experts

But what happened to fun

We don’t go out together

For a walk in the park

We drive to the nearest shops

And spend till its dark

No money left

Credit shout the Banks

Where does the money come from

Anther loan, Oh Thanks!

I look at the World

And long for easier times

When we could play with our children

And not feel out of line

Progress makes it better

The world a richer place to be

Richer for some maybe

But much poorer for me..

Oh, words of truth. Progress at what price? Although, times always do seem better looking back on them than when we are going through them! I guess today demands that we have our priorities in order. Thanks for your poem that brougt all these different thoughts to mind. It has a nice flow conjuring up some fond memories of better days. Peace and joy.....Jerry

jerryi have to say though i love all my technology (most of which i cannot use!) i am happiest just sat reading a book in the peace and quiet. progress means longer hours and more debt. but unfortunately we cannot turn the clock back.

Snow, yet another wonderful poem well written with a good choice of words and memories.

How very true this poem is, a few years ago I wrote on paper with a pen now I mostly write on a pc rarely touching a pen.

Sadly we have to progress, whether its for good or ill is irrelevant apparantly. Maybe the workers in the industrial revolution had the right idea, to throw their sabot into the machines.....

I like to believe that the simple life is still there we just need to make time away from the modern world. Time with a book or a simple walk with a loved one are still the best ways to spend time.

boney, thanks for your kind comments. i try to make time in my busy life for the simple things like a walk in the part with someone special, or just sitting holding their hand.

Wow! Great poem , very current . The progress brought a lot of good and bad things , but for me the progress it is not the problem ; what is destroying our way of living it is the poor education we have now . Here in Brazil another Big Brother is coming , after one month since the arrival of digital tv . We have a better image on tv , good transmission; i have never seen so much money invested in tecnology , but education will have to wait a bit more time, at least we have the Big Brother to keep the people alienated.

jbortti, thank you for your kind comments. i agree with you completely education should be the most important thing in any childs life. computers are fine but knowing the simple joy of reading is amazing. so many young people are being short changed by the lack of education. big brother is just another money spinning nightmare, my opinion only.
