To my mother

When the man
To my right
Took shrapnel
In the fight,
I counted
Each second
As the bombs
Arced the sky,
Then buried
My face
And waited
To die

And I thought
About you
In the sand
Where I lied,
Wondering how
You’d cope,
After I’d died

Do you think
Of me now,
Looking down
From on high,
Since they
Carried you out
And I kissed
You goodbye?
