The stars can’t be seen tonight
Through the clouds and the rain
And I was hoping for that guiding light
To help shoulder some of the pain
I look up into the vastness, surrounded by the dark
And I can see how the loneliness might have played a part
Engulfed in the silence
That we all know as night
Left with one reassurance that all will be alright
In those few hours
Where I swear the sun won’t rise
The stillness is around me, the only compromise
And I know it’s tiresome to hear, that it will be alright
I know you heard it as a lie, when they said, goodnight
The clock chimes slowly, sounding on its own
It rings the hour of being all alone
And the quiet that follows is sure to make you scream
Because when you go to bed a goodnight is merely a dream
Sleeping seems impossible for you to achieve
You wouldn’t dare close your eyes, you’d rather see than believe
All the emotions swarming inside of you
You keep your eyes open but you haven’t got a clue
In the minutes that seem to take days in themselves
You relive the words that must have been directed to someone else
How could anyone be so sure that they’re always right?
How could they willingly tell you the lie, goodnight?
The stars can’t be seen tonight
From where I lie awake
But I hope they’re shining for somebody
I hope they keep promises that we made
I hope somebody somewhere
Looks up and knows it will really be alright
I hope they smile to themselves and think, what a good, goodnight
