No one knew how the child drowned.
Just out of sight and sound
Slipping by on her own
Not listening to the moan
Of mum or dad
About how bad
She’d been
Having seen
Them copulating
In bed while waiting
For the glass
Of milk to pass
Her way the night before.
No one knew how the child drowned.
Some one was bound
To have seen
Her or been
Within touching distance
At some instance
Or other these past
Hours, they thought and cast
No further thought
Nor brought
Up her not being there
To each the other’s care.
The child drowned
Without care or sound
Except a small wave or two
To some other me or you.
