The XYZ affair caused the huge rise of a scare.
With no money for a bribe, should the U.S. lower its pride?
Was the government even strong?
Weren't the traders' rights long gone?
With France and Britain at our throats
Will we fight that battle with our lone boat?
Shall we stand for our cause with no remorse?
Shall we stay neutral even with the possibly fatal results?
With neutrality comes a problem.
Left and right we turn but there's no where there to run.
With conflicts so bad that war is at hand
Shall the U.S. give up its neutral stand?
We chose to stand neutral
Stuck in the middle
Both left and right, it's hard to fight
But with strength and will, we'll go on day and night.
