Who do you look up to when there is no hero?

I wanted to write a story

about a man who never lived.

I would give him qualities

like compassion and integrity,

where others had none.

He would be strong of heart and mind

but not in the conventional way.

I would paint stories of his exploits,

about the wars he won without death,

about the battles he fought with only words.

He would believe in outdated ideals

like honor, justice, and truth.

He would never be too quick to act,

a brilliant thinker, a philosopher-king.

Wisdom would be his sword,

reason would be his shield.

Life's unfairness was never an excuse.

I would write his story,

living each moment at his side,

and I might start a legend

to start all legends again -

to have someone to respect,

someone to look up to,

like we did when we were children

and all things could be accomplished,

in the age of innocence and belief,

in the age of fairytales and legends.
