We were born in shadows

Searching for the light

Grow old and die as adults

Children of the night

We were born in coal mines

Longing for the gold

Searching for the bright shine

We rest amongst the coal

We are thieves and beggars

We live out in the cold

And although we look like lepers

Our hearts are strong and bold

There is a hope for all of us

We beggars, thieves and rogues

Thank god we have hearts warm enough

To chase away the cold

Hope is a thing with feathers

That perches in the soul

It dare not rest it's wings here

Amongst the dirt and coal

For we must make our own luck

Our own happiness and ease

Because the world's against us

The poor, the brave, the free
