It hurts to be a woman

Poem By: whitehart

Tags: hurts, to, be, a, woman

Living in the city, we sometimes forget the kind of things women and girls in other different communities have to go through in their homes. Well, this was an attempt to get into their shoes, triggered by a feature I saw on TV. View table of contents...

Brought into this world,
Not by my own choice,
All I have seen and confirmed is,
It hurts to be a woman.

Watching the boys go out and play,
Firewood and water I have to fetch,
And all the time I tell myself,
It hurts to be a woman.

School comes and still I work,
Brothers go and get an education,
In the garden and the Kitchen my education lies,
I cry, I beg, I succeed,
Why does it hurt to be a woman?

Off to school I finally am,
Pleased with myself and learning fast!
Of course firewood and water still need fetching,
But in school I am and it doesn't hurt so much
Was yet to learn yet again,
How much it hurts to be a woman!

The call to the knife I had expected,
Others had escaped it and I thought I will too,
The chief got there too late,
There were no tears in my eyes,
That was not expected of the brave.
But the blood trickling down my legs was all he needed to see,
To read the expression on my face,
It hurts to be a woman!

And now I am a woman,
Womanly duties I must perform
A fourteen year old I am,
A woman to a fifty year old,
I hate being a woman.

I hate my self
I hate my life
I hate the person I have been forced to be,
And all I ask is,
Why was the woman created,
If being a woman hurt so?

Thanks for the comment Brian, yeah, we sometime forget not everyone lives in the 'confort zone' we are at. Have a cool holiday season! Take care

It's so easy to close our eyes to what goes on around us, isn't it? That's all it takes... just a closing of the eyes. We can choose NOT to see the inequalities between the sexes, we can choose NOT to see the poverty and starvation and disease in our own backyard or around the world. It's nice that you have written this poem, Deb, as a reminder to all of us about the plight of the woman in many parts of the world.....Jerry

Thanks Jerry, yeah, it is always easier, at least we sometimes think it is, to close our eyes on everything else. Am glad the poem had a positive effect on you. I just try to think as they would, try being in their shoes for a couple of minutes, and I know it's nowhere near easy for them. Happy holidays!

A womans work is never done.

True words! Thanks for commenting!

Your poem made me think...we American women really take for granted how we are able to live, and we complain about cleaning our husband's pee off the toilet seat while others are suffering just to survive. You've really made me think about my perspective on womanhood.

Hey Brooke, thanks for the comment. The poems intent was to make people think...there are still people in this world that go through these pains....and wish they were born differently.
