Truth or consequences, truth or lies, common or uncommon, public living or private life, O, where and when did the balance shift - just asking

When did we stop speaking true
Stop being me speaking to you
Now when I look you in the eye
Do I talk straight or do I lie
Little white lies creeping through
This thing becoming what we do
All the pain that is almost hid
Unseeing eye behind drooped lid
Whenever did we stop speaking true

When did we start telling lies
Start judging honor by its size
Spearing quick with tongue and tooth
Swallowing down all harsher truth
Taking it in to force down rough
Chewing fast then spewing out guff
Looking always to appear ever sweet
Trampling on honesty with our feet
When oh when did we start telling lies

Is it really only we two
Locked in a room where a lie is true
Or is the whole world engaged in this
Shouting out banners, taking the piss
Are we all locked in this new kind of life
Where we claim paradise in the slice of a knife
Where we advertise love while making war
Say to come in while locking the door
Is it really just only we two

What do we buy with our smelted lies
What odd coinage for what odd buys
When did we trade in that plain old style
Of buying with truth not deceit and guile
When did the coverup and spreading doubt
Take the place of speaking out
When did we lose the simplicity
Of me telling you and you telling me
What do we buy with such smelted lies

Tell me true oh please tell me do
Is it really only just me and you
Are we the ones who fell from grace
Are we alone in this disgrace
Is it we who bought the conman's scheme
To call a nightmare a fantasy dream
To call a hoodwink an honest try
To call a double cross straight as a dye
Tell me true please do tell me do

Is a lie become our only gift
Pulling a flimflam a bunco a grift
A diddle a bilk a sting a rook
Finagle bamboozle cook the book
Hustle as stranger not my own true
Hornswoggle and gyp - is that me is that you
When did we eat of what tree's fruit
When did we lose our voice, go mute
Is lying become our only gift

just asking
