Choices are Chances

Poetry By: Wilbur
Poetry

The choices we don't make we never forget. Somewhere between choices made and gotten and choices not made and therefore not gotten, we live that are real and very much with us. Old not-taken roads, not-made choices, live in our memories and sometimes comfort us and sometimes chill us. -- Or others.

Choices are Chances

She came to rest just behind me
And waited, braced on her walker
I knew her to be kind and sweet-voiced
Her husband not much of a talker
He lingered there beside her
Waiting for her to get ready
And when she had gotten her balance
She said, It's okay now - I'm steady
And he'd walked off quite way away
To stand on the verge by the curb
His back now facing towards us
As she murmured to me, That's my Herb
I asked looking up from my bench seat
Did she want to share, maybe sit
And she answered low, in a whisper, oh no
No, you see, Herbie, he'd have a fit
Then before I could question further
She'd already gone on to say
That the smoke in the air upset her
Had been bothering all the day
It seemed it affected her allergies
And she said that it wasn't real fair
To be bothered so much in her breathing
By something afloat in the air
I looked up at her feeling badly
And she said oh dear, oh well
We don't get to pick, now do we,
The things that make our life hell
Then she patted her fingers and gave me
One of her glorious tender sweet smiles
And murmured low these words to me
But I do wish I'd married Giles
Right then the bus pulled up puffing
Her husband turned to come back
She bent further down close to tell me
My sweet Giles oh alas and alack
Of a sudden Herb was beside her
In attendance all stiff proper and tall
She gave him a pat and a sweet smile
He stood ready to catch should she fall
She started her slow shuffle forward
No backward look and no word
I sat on in amazement and wonder
At Life both profound and absurd
