One Sure Bet

Poetry By: Wilbur
Poetry

What always happens - it seems inevitable -- there is no escape. The best thing you can do is to bet on it.

One Sure Bet

It seems to me the sure way to bet

Is that once you're comfortably, comfortably set

You'll find that you are without your specs

You've picked up a book on Tibetan treks

You sneeze and you sneeze with no handkerchief

Your knee cramps up and there's just no relief

Your telephone rings with no one to get it --

It was off this morning and you didn't re-set it

* * * * * *

Ahhh, plump the pillows and settle back

No more can happen, it's all right, Jack!

You've taken care of all of that stuff

You're set to sit here at peace on your duff

Knee, nose, specs, and you've got the right book

The telephone's set too, it's now off the hook

The light is adjusted, it's at a great angle

Your arms are tucked in and your feet are a-dangle

* * * * * *

That's when you hear from outside in the road

A sound like a rooster crossed with a toad

And then in the dooryard your own auto's roar

The next thing you hear is a key in the door

And, quick as that, your kids come piling in

Right behind them -- your wife's best angry grin

Yep, this is the only one sure fire bet!

The world goes to hell just as soon as you're set
