The day is warm the sun is out
I taste the air and walk about
The grass is crisp the leaves are green
I behold the beauty of this scene
The sun it shines but dappled now
For I am beneath the trees great bough
The breeze it sighs within the trees
My senses tingle to be pleased
Yes I'm honoured to see this land
Yes this land where on I stand
But what is this upon the ground
Tis' one small bird that I've found
It jumps it hops with crippled wing
What is your plight you poor thing
With beating heart it's in my hand
For it cannot fly and cannot stand
With frightened eye it looks at me
It's only then that I see
An Arrow tip has caused this sting
With deadly force it killed its wing
Who did this deed who did this thing
That this poor bird suffers broken wing
What foul beast doth prowl these woods?
But kill to kill and not for food
A voice I hear now on the air
Tis in my heart that I do swear
But hold, I see them now as plain as plain
It be but children that play a game
They play the game and the game is good
The cry it comes "Here Robin Hood"
Tis then I know whence the arrow came
Yes it came from off that game
That bird it lies within my hand
Can this breast the heart ache stand
For death will take it soon
Yes before the next new moon
I will sit and hold it close
And see it to its last repose
