How cruel is life for my friend to take
Now tear on cheek I stand by grave
I was not there right at the end
Yes all alone, lay my friend
By my side he walked with me
A more loving soul there could not be
He cared not how I would vote
He cared not the colour of my coat
He only cared that I was me
And that I cared for him, you see
Charlie was a friend of mine
Yes and trusted all the time
No need for words we walked the lane
Him by my side I walked with cane
Then it came that fateful day
That speeding car, or so they say
A glancing blow that’s all it took
Then death he came for one quick look
My dog had come to look for me
For I was out to get our tea
No more will we but walk that lane
No more will life e’r be the same
