The water blue and yet is calm
I lie beneath and do no harm
Though my body large I swim with grace
For I am here and in my place
The deep it rings my mournful cry
And through cresting waves I do fly
It is my way to be below
And on my watery way I go
---------
But then it comes, and then once more
I hear the crash of that great oar
I raise my head and then but see
Tis human kind who will kill me
That boat it comes but closer yet
Then in my heart I do fret
For I have seen this thing before
How they kill with that great oar
------------
Still they come yet closer still
They will not be cheated from their kill
I hear now those voices more
Yes preparing that great oar
I see them point, one holds the line
This life they take will be mine
I see that lance now held upright
And flung my way with all his might
------------
My back is breached the lance is home
Tis hard to think that I am gone
What have these humans done to me
The light now fades, I cannot see
The sea is red, my blood is out
I try to give one last shout
It is no good I am too weak
I would cry pity, if I could speak
No longer free to swim and fly
Now is the time that I must die
