AN: This was written a long time ago. I don't know if any of you remember Somer Thompson, but when I came home and heard the story about her on the news it broke my heart and I wrote this poem to get the feelings out. I never shared it before because I was afriad of what people would think.
Why Did Somer Die
I came home from school today,
And sat down on the couch.
The news was on, tears found my eyes
A little girl found dead in the trash.
It ain’t fair, it ain’t right
What is this country coming to?
What happened to all the values?
Gone, rinsed away leaving only this hell
I can’t believe this happens to so many a child.
Empathy hits me hard and holds me tight
My eyes bled feeling pain
That will never be as bad as Somer's
I look to the sky hoping for the truth,
Hoping for a reason why.
And I only find words, ripped from my throat
God will please tell me why
Did Somer have to die?
Shards of ice fill the air,
And they just hang there,
Never moving, never yielding their way.
No more warmth, no more sun.
Only ice and sleet and snow.
Lakes freeze and rivers stop,
The world pauses and nothing moves.
As I scream to the heavens
Please God will you tell me why
Did Somer have to die?
No more hope, no more life,
I’d give up my own to bring this girl back alive,
But it’s too late, nothing can save her.
A life destroyed before it should,
And God, there, he just stood,
Watching Somer fade away, letting warmth disappear
God can you please tell me
Will you just tell me why
Send me a sign
And just tell me why
Did Somer have to die?
Why did Somer die?
