Would You Prefer Nothing?

Is it worth pain for the chance of being happy?
Actually, I have come to the conclusion that pain is not the opposite of happiness; apathy is. So this poem addresses the question: Is it better to have no feeling, or to risk being in pain?

Is it worth the risk of letting go

Of pain until you do not know

What joy is, or what it can be -

Bondage; the price of being free.

Oh tell me, please, is joy worth pain?

Is a moment's sunshine worth years of rain?

Or is grey preferred to black or white

No reason to smile; no need to fight

When nothing can be worth your time

Do you throw it away and fall behind?

Oh knowledge, curse me, teach me joy

Or leave me now, an inanimate toy.

But tell me, first, before you go

The one thing that I long to know;

Is it worth it to be free from Hell

If you are cast from Heaven as well?
