As we are inundated with the materialism and commercialisation of Christmas one may indeed wonder what became of Christ? We have entered once more the biggest commercial money making season of the year! You cannot turn a corner or flick a TV channel or open a paper or magazine without being told in no uncertain terms the need for you to buy this or that! It is our duty, we must get this for wee so and so, or that for sweet little….!

CHRISTMAS or XMAS

Christmas comes but once a year
A time of love and joy
The birth of Jesus Christ the Lord
In Bethlehem’s stable bare

The Shepherds saw the angels bright
They heard the angels’ song
A message to ends of earth
‘Peace to all mankind’

Yet Christmas changed - its not the same
Christ's now dropped from its name!
It’s Xmas time to one and all
It’s so much better, yes?

Correctness rules this world today
We wish not to offend
Religion is a thing of strife
We hide it all away

‘X’ stands for what, we all may ask
What is this mystery ‘X’?
A question good and right you say
The answer I now know

This mystery ‘X’ we all do praise
What is its secret? Tell!
Our celebrations show it clear
The shops are packed and full

It starts before the blessed month
The ‘Money Bells’ do ring
September now begins the rush
The season starts even then

An ancient god of yore I heard
Mammon the god of wealth
Mammon now hides, his name is ‘X’
The mystery now unfolds

The merchants fill their bulging purse
Materialism grips the heart
We all can see it everywhere
No land is free from it

It clutches tight and hard on all
Addicted to its thrill!
We hunger, thirst, desire, it more
Even months before it’s due

The shops are filling up with stocks
The adverts everywhere
The Sirens sing their song so sweet
Their tempting wares displayed

TV and magazine do vie
To 'ring' from us our cash
The shopping Malls 'ring' out the news
We want your money NOW!

To snare the captive's heart they work
And all to line their purse
Its is their biggest time of year
Elves, Santa, Reindeer too

Hear the coins - they ring so loud
Their sound our ‘Jingle Bells’
Money, money cries the god
Where is Christ in that?

It’s not its bad, for giving’s good
Yet it’s not Christ we see
Yes celebrate, remember Him!
He lived and died for you

Santa, yes we understand
St Nicolas was his name
He gave from love and not for gain
Remember that I say

King Wenceslas also helped the poor
For such were Christ’s own words
But Christmas comes but once a year
The day of Christ's own birth

Remember most what day it is
Christ's birthday it remains
He’s not an ‘X’
His name we know

This time’s a time of love and joy
A time to help and give
It’s not a time to selfishly gain
To fill your pockets up

No, I say to all of this
Its’ not a time of gain!
Its’ not a time to take and take
It is a time to give

These things we do from thankful hearts
To share His love with all
Remembering now His birth and gift
And not fill merchants’ hands

The glittering gold it sparkles so
Their eyes are filled with greed
It is a time of love I say
For love came down to us

Love lives within our heart each day
If we will let it in
So give thanks I say, and celebrate
This message I proclaim

The angels sang His praise on high
Remember that today
Peace to men! Good will they sing
As Christmas comes once more
