How Do You Live Your Life? Wisely or Unwisely?
Ed sat at the far end of the waiting room. The room was something he had never seen before; it reminded him of a doctor’s office. But not one person in the room looked sick. He didn’t understand why he was here, what was the purpose of this place. Ed looked around at the people around him waiting for there turn. Some were crying, some where happy and some were in what looked like a state of shock. Ed looked at the guy next to him, he just sat there looking at the white floor. Not that it made a difference where the guy looked; everything in this room was white. White chairs, walls, floors, doors, counters; everything was just white. Ed leaned in closer to the guy.
“Um, excuse me sir? Where are we?” asked Ed.
The guy looked up at him with sad eyes. “Son, that myself I don’t know. But whatever has happened to me……” The guy broke down into tears and covered his face. Ed sat there not knowing what to do. “Just ask Miss Happy over there.” Sobbed the guy. Ed looked around the old man to the lady next to him, she was smiling and staring at the door waiting for someone to call her name.
“Er….Miss Happy?” asked Ed shyly. The guy next to Ed laughed.
“Oh no it’s Suzy dear.” Said the lady as she shot the now laughing guy a look.
“Ok then Suzy. Do you recall where we’re at?” Ed kneeled on the floor looking at the elderly lady’s face hoping she might come up with reasonable place.
Suzy’s smile grew even bigger.
“I’m not really sure where we are sweetie,” Ed groaned. “But I do know that where ever we are, it makes me happy.” Said Suzy dreamily. “I have observed one thing. Do you see the other door to the left?”
“Yea” said Ed as he took a seat to the right of the lady.
“Well I’ve noticed that all the people crying have been going through that door. The room that door leads to; well it doesn’t look very pleasant.” Ed leaned in closer to the lady. “The people who are bright and smiling have been going through the door on the right which leads to a rather lovely room if I do say so myself.” Suzy giggled. “But for the people like you, unsure why you’re here you must figure it out. Look at the two verses on the wall: Ephesians 5:15 and Ecclesiastes 3:17. Go ahead read the aloud deary.” Urged Suzy.
Ed hesitated. “Ephesians 5:15 reads: Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise.” Ed sat back and began to read the next verse. “Ecclesiastes 3:17 reads: I thought in my heart, God will bring to judgment both the righteousness and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time for every deed.”
Suzy smiled. “Do you understand now why you’re here?” asked Suzy.
“I don’t get it. I mean I think I get it. The first verse is basically saying to live your life wisely. Not to waste it, with drugs and all that stuff.”
“That’s one way of putting it. How about the next verse?”
“God as in the Lord, the big guy himself. Will bring everyone here for judgment. Like the Judgment day. It’s up to them to decide where they want to go, it depends on how they live there life.” Responded Ed, his voice slowly gaining confidence.
“Exactly!” cheered Suzy. “But you’ve got to put it all together.”
“Mrs. Suzy Delano” said a voice near the door to the right. Suzy smiled.
“Think about it and something good will happen.” Suzy got up and started the somewhat long trek to the door.
Ed thought quick. “So if we live our life wisely we get rewarded.” Ed looked at the door to the right. “If we live our life unwisely we get what we deserve, hell. Wait Suzy! I’ve got it!”
Suzy turned around, a big smile still on her aged face.
“It’s Heaven and hell! If we live our lives wisely we get rewarded with eternal life, but if we live our lives unwisely we get a short stop and a sudden fall.”
Suzy and the other lady laughed.
“That’s a good way of putting it.” Said Suzy as she turned around and walked through the threshold of the door.
“You’ve got it, I’ll be right back.” Said the lady who helped Suzy through the door.
Ed smiled and walked back to take a seat next to the gentlemen he had been sitting next to before. “Do you get it?” asked Ed, hope filled his enthusiastic face.
“Son, I’m not going to Heaven. There’s no hope for me.”
“Gerard Livingsworth.” Said a deep voice, the left door opened automatically.
“You see, I lived my life unwisely. I killed a man.” Said Gerard regretfully.
Ed stopped dead. He didn’t know how to respond to what Gerard had just said. He sat back down in his seat. It was all coming to him now. Gerard had lived his life unwisely and went to hell. When Suzy lived her life wisely and got rewarded with eternal life in Heaven.
“Edward Smart?” said a familiar voice.
Ed looked up. It was the lady who had helped Suzy through the door, she was there standing right in front of him.
“I prefer Ed.”
“Would you please come with me.” the lady led Ed to a third door. A door Ed hadn’t seen. “You’ve learned the lesson God wanted you to learn, now go show us and apply it to your life.” The lady opened the door and elevator appeared. The lady gave Ed a reassuring smile and Ed walked in. A chair appeared in it and Ed took a seat. As the lady closed the door the elevator started to fade slowly.
“Mom!” Yelled Ed as he woke up. Ed’s mom, Theresa, ran up the stairs.
“What’s wrong sweetie?”
“Nothing’s wrong, lets go to Church today…………….”
Theresa dropped her dish washing towel. “O-Ok, um, great! What made you want to go?”
“Lessons learned Mom, lessons learned.”
