Her eyes closed for an instant. She sighed in pleasure as the cool breeze came in contact with her skin, making her thin shirt ruffle slightly and her hair fall out of place. She opened her eyes knowing she had to keep watch on the road before her or else she’d either collide into a tree or a car. That wouldn’t be good. She could just see it on the news. “Girl on a bike crashes into a car and loses her life and by the way she didn’t have her helmet on.” They would also put a crappy picture of her on the internet for the world to see.
She turned the corner, paddling her bike in at a slow rhythmic pace humming softly to herself. “Someday my prince will come...” it sounded so cheesy. But who could blame a girl for dreaming.
She parked her bike in front of her house and walked inside. “Mabel go get changed. It’s almost five thirty and you need to go to youth group.” Her mother said.
Mabel’s eyes widened. She had forgotten it was Friday.
“This love you have for me it goes beyond my wildest dreams...” Mabel sang with her mates as she paid the guitar. She was playing the reefs while her mate Jaden played the chords. She had fake geeky glasses on in a bid to try and look smart.
The night ended at 8pm and she sat by the skateboard ramp with her friends May, Matthew, Simon and Bella chatting happily while waiting for her ride back to church.
“School’s resumed. Exams are starting... shoot me now.” She said throwing her hands up in the air.
They all laughed “Same here.” Bella replied. “We’re screwed big time.”
“We’ll start studying soon.” Matthew said laughing. He patted her back. “Stop worrying. We’ve got six weeks to get ready.” Mabel punched his arm.
A car pulled up at the driveway. Mabel smiled seeing Bella’s dad. She slid down the ramp with Bella. “Bye boys. Have a good weekend. See you all at church on Sunday.” They both waved the boys goodbye and went into the car.
They got back to church. Little kids were running around as if Aliens had invaded the planet. They were all screaming and yelling. It was total chaos.
“I’m bored.” Mabel said to Bella. “Let’s go outside” Bella nodded and both girls left the church building and headed outside.
“You know, when I get married, I’m not walking like a carrot down the aisle. I’m going to dance down the aisle.” Mabel said.
She laughed and started singing forever by Chris Brown loudly and out of tune, without a care in the world. Bella soon joined in and they were singing like lunatics. “It’s like I’ve waited my whole life for this one night it’s going to be me you and the dance floor.”
Mabel knew that people who drove past would think they were drunk... and gay. Mabel didn’t care. She was having a good time.
They were now singing to telephone by Lady gaga swinging their hips and laughing uncontrollably when a guy walked up to them. They didn’t even know he was there until he yelled out “Hello!”
Both girls turned around. “Hello.” Bella said. Mabel just smiled.
“I was wondering if any of you have a phone. I’ve just been mugged and I need to call someone to come pick me up.”
“Oh...” Mabel said. Telephone was playing on her mobile. She quickly picked it from where she placed it, turned off the song and gave the guy the phone. “Here you go.”
When the guy took the mobile from her, their hands touched for a moment and Mabel gasped. His hand was warm and smooth unlike hers. Their eyes locked and Mabel quickly shifted her gaze.
“Thanks.” He said. His hair was a mess and he had a split lip. It didn’t hinder his good looks anyway.
He turned around and began making a phone call to someone to pick him up.
“Should we tell someone? He looks hurt.” Bella said.
“Nah. He only has a split lip.” Mabel replied. She was staring at the guy with interest.
“Don’t do anything stupid Mabel.”
A car pulled up and the guy thanked the girls one more time before leaving.
“Hope he doesn’t need stitches on that lip of his.” Bella muttered.
Mabel smiled. “We’ve been good Samaritans today. Let’s go back inside.” Mabel started walking back to the church “Oh crap.”
“What is it Mabel.”
“He dropped his wallet.”
Bella came beside her. “What are we going to do.” She picked the wallet from the ground.
“I’m going after him.”
Bella shook her head. “You don’t have your Transperth card with you.”
“I do.” Mabel took the card out of her pocket. “Tell my parents I went back to youth to hang out. They’ll kill me when I get back but don’t tell them I’ve gone looking for a stranger.”
Bella nodded. “Don’t do anything stupid.”
She trembled and hugged herself as the chilly wind blew, biting her skin. She looked at the bus stop sign. The bus would be here in two minutes. Mabel thought God I wished for an adventure. I’m about to step into one now. Keep me safe. She took a quick glance at the guy’s wallet. The bus pulled up. Mabel looked back at the church, sighed and entered the bus.
Her Transperth card didn’t work and the driver raised his eyebrow. “Please you have to give me a ride to Warnbro. A guy who needed my phone dropped his wallet and I need to give it back to him.” She pleaded.
The driver looked at her “Why don’t you hand it to the police?”
Mabel grunted. “I’ll give you my Coco Chanel watch.”
The driver smiled “You’ve got a deal.”
The bus stopped at Main Lane road. Mabel needed to get to Sixth Avenue and find 4 Campbell place.
Before she left the bus Mabel turned around. “Do you know where Sixth Avenue is?”
The driver smiled” It’s a mile and a half away from here.”
“You’re dropping me off there.”
“I’m the only passenger in this bus and you have my Chanel watch. If not, I can tell the authorities that you take bribes from passengers.”
The driver grunted. “Listen young lady-“
“You’re dropping me off at sixth avenue.” And with that the driver rolled her eyes and kept driving.
“We’re at sixth avenue.” She announced two minutes later.
Mabel smiled as she got off the bus. “Thank you.” And walked away.
Mabel finally found the guy’s house. She was exhausted and her feet were killing her. The guy owed her. She had given her watch to a bitchy bus driver who didn’t know her left from right.
The house was a three storey mansion. The guy was definitely rich. She stumbled towards his house and ringed the door bell.
The door swung open and he was standing before her.
“Hello.” He said.
“Hi.” Mabel replied. She looked like an idiot.
“You forgot this.” She brought out his wallet.
“Oh.” He took it from her.
“Aren’t you going to say thank you rich boy?” She asked. “I just gave my Chanel watch to a bitch-“
She stopped as his lips came in contact with hers. Mabel froze for a moment. His lips were warm and gentle. “Thank you.” He whispered. He took her hand and led her inside. “You can stay with me and my family tonight. The trains and buses will not start working ‘till 5am tomorrow.”
Mabel smiled. She finally got her prince.
