Rose&Jesse

Novel By: Adoette
Romance

Two very different families, both alike in dignity, in fair Monroe, Wisconsin, where we lay our scene.
From long-held grudge break to new fighting,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two families
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life;
Whose misguided piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.

This is a modern, my own version, of the tale of Romeo&Juliet. It is written as a novel. I hope you enjoy it! View table of contents...

The hot, mid-august sun blazed over the seemingly sleepy town of Monroe, Wisconsin. The wind rustled in the trees, and you could hear a cow moo lazily, or a locust buzz. Unfortunately, the early Sunday morning motions around Main Street was not enough to satisfy Peter Montgomery. As a fairly hormonal boy of about 16, he wanted action, trouble, something . His brother, Michael, had a similar mindset. He sighed, flicking open his pocket knife, and closing it again. Flipping it open, and closing it.
"Man, where are the girls ?" Peter ran his fingers through his slightly overgrown, sandy colored hair.
"At home." Michael sat down on the steps of the gas station, eyes darting to the Lutheran Church at the end of the road. "Or church." Peter laughed. He sounded like a hyena to Michael. "Not that they would ever wanna mess around with a guy like you, Pete." Michael continued, poking fun at his younger brother. Peter glared, and said nothing, also sitting down on the steps. A few moments of silence passed, but suddenly there was a shout, followed by laughter. The two brothers whirled around to see a group of well dressed boys pulling up to the gas station in a BMW.
"Devereauxs." Michael growled, and got to his feet, The blade was unflipped. The lazy feel of the air was changed now. There was tension, obvious tenion, as the boy driving the car glared at the two brothers with menace. Peter looked worried. "Let's not fight, Michael." he said, eyebrows knit together in concern. "Remember... what the Mayor said? He doesn't want any more fighting..."
"I don't give a shit what the Mayor said. The Devereaux family has been asking for trouble ever since Memorial Day." Michael snapped. "We need to even things out." Before Peter could stop him, Michael advanced to the group of guys in the BMW.
"Any of you prissy ass-faces want a fight?" Michael smirked at them. There was a beat, and the boy driving the car stepped out, slamming the door behind him. He was a little older than Michael, with greasy black hair, and a hardened, scarred face.
"At your service Mikey." He smiled, and a silver filling in the back of his mouth glinted. Michael swallowed. "Good old Tyler. Always up for a fight." he sneered, waving his blade, drawing it to his soon-to-be-competitors attention.
Tyler laughed, and without warning, whipped out a gun. "You think you're pretty cool, don't you Montgomery?" He hissed. "Don't forget, Devereauxs always win."
Michael turned bright red as he tried to fight down his temper. Too late. Michael's powerful fist connected with Tyler's skull, and everyone nearby could hear the crunch. Then everything lost control. Peter ran up to Michael, dodging blows from the other members of the Devereaux family, and the pair sprinted back up main street, headed towards home.
