Chapter 2
Landon had gone to sleep and hadn't woken up all night, he was still sleeping in the guest bedroom. But not peacefully, my room is right next to the guest room, I heard the bed creak all night and I heard groaning from the the other side of the wall. The walls in the house were very thin, it's a rebuilt old farm house with rooms and such added on to make it bigger. It's not a big mansion, but it's home.
Dad and Tate were out working already, mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. Neither of us have ever been very big on breakfast. Though give us a fruit salad and we'll be more than happy to eat breakfast!
The back screen door squeaked opened and in walked my uncle Charles, but I call him Charley, I'm the only one he allows to call him that. He walked over to the cabinet and pulled out a mug. He poured himself a cup of coffee and came over to the table.
"Morning cowgirl." He kissed the top of my head and sat in one of the open seats at the table. "Morning Rose." He said to my mother.
"Good morning Charles, how's your morning so far?" She asked.
"Can't complain too much, I'm on my way out to help old Cooper fix the axle on the hay wagon. It's busted again and needs a new one. Going to cost a fortune, unfortunately." He replied grimly.
"Oh boy, that's not good at all." My mother said.
Uncle Charley lives in the bunk house, though he has his own room set up in there. He helps out with the ranch and is like a second father to me. He taught me to drive a stick shift truck and taught me everything I know about cars and fixing them. Which is alot! And I enjoy it, working on a car at night with the garage light on and the night creatures making music for me. It's peaceful, gives me time to myself and time to think.
"Hey cowgirl, you gonna come help your daddy and I with the axle?" Uncle Charley asked using the nickname he's had for me ever since I was little. He stood up from the table and looked down at me.
"Of course, I love helping ya'll out with that stuff." I smile up at him. I hopped up out of my chair. "See you later, mama." I kissed my mom on the cheek and followed my uncle back out the screen door.
The three of us were still working on the broken axle when the lunch bell was rung. We cleaned up and headed inside for lunch. Grilled chicken, corn on the cob and mashed potatoes...very yummy. My mom is the best cook besides my grandma. But we only see her on holidays, they moved all the way to Florida. Why? I'll never know. How could anyone want to leave this heaven of a place?
I was about to grab a plate for myself when my mother handed me one already filled with yummy food. I went to take a bite of the chicken and she smacked my hand. I looked up with a confused look, wondering why in the world would she slap my hand away from food?
"That's for Landon, why don't you run it to him and then you can come back for your food?" She answered my silent question.
"Fine, but if Tate eats it all before I get back...I'm gonna eat him!" Tate chuckled from his place at the table.
The guest room door was closed, I knocked on it and no answer. I waited and then knocked again. Still no answer, either he's asleep or something is wrong. I turned the knob and opened the door. The bed was empty. I set the plate down on the bedside table and looked around the room.
His boots and hat were still in the corner chair over by the window. So he didn't skip out on us, I heard the sink in the guest bathroom turn on, then off and the door was pulled back. Landon came out in nothing but boxers, his chest and shoulders were broad. A six pack to die for and stubble on his face from not shaving yet today. His dark brown hair was messy and honey colored eye's were tired.
I blushed then turned my back to him. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to...I...my mother asked me to bring in your lunch." I finally spat out. I'm sure I seemed like a blubbering idiot. I heard a laugh from behind me and then a hand on my shoulder.
"It's fine, I'm the one walking around in my boxers." I turned and saw the grin on his face. He had the most handsome smile I'd ever laid eyes on.
"True, though I suppose you don't have anything else to wear....Where is your stuff? I can go pick it up for you, if you'd like?" I did my best to keep my eyes on his face instead of his mouth watering body.
He walked over to the bed, but with a slight limp. Barely even noticeable, only if you looked for it. He sat on the edge and pulling on his blue jeans that were lying on the side of the bed. He stood back up and walked back over to me. He was so close I could smell his sexy manly scent.
"If you can give me a ride, I'll show you where my pickup is and I can drive it back here." He starred into my eyes. His gaze lingered and then he turned to the bed where his shirt was waiting to be put back on.
I was saddened by that, but I tried not to let it show. I only met this guy and he's making me scream yummy! I realized I hadn't given him an answer. Mentally kicking myself, I replied. "Sure, let me just check with my mother to see if you are in a condition to drive. If she gives us the okay we can head on out." I said, then headed in the direction of the kitchen to find my mother.
Everyone was still sitting eating when I came in. I waited for my dad to finish what he was saying, then bent down to my mother sitting at the table. "Hey mama, is Landon okay to drive?" He eyebrows shot up in a questioning way, so I kept going. "His truck is in town with his stuff, I offered to fetch his things and he said he'd show me where his truck was and then he'd drive it back here." I explained.
"I don't see a problem as long as he takes it easy and feels up to doing it. But if he looks the least bit tired don't let him drive. Just grab his things and we can pick up his truck later." She said.
"Alrighty, I'll see ya'll later." I said to everyone.
"What? You're skipping lunch?" Tate asked.
I had completely forgotten about lunch. I suppose both Landon and I both should eat before leaving. I made my plate and sat down to eat. Landon hadn't come out of the room by the time I was done, so I went to let him know what my mother said. This time the door was wide open and he was sitting back on the bed with his arms resting above his head on the wooden head board of the bed.
"We have the all clear. As long as you take it easy and if you feel or look the least bit tired I have the direct orders to not let you drive. We'll just pick up your things and then get your truck later." I said with a slight smile. The way he was looking at me made me curious as hell, but I wasn't about to ask him what the look meant. So I asked if he had finished his lunch and he pointed to the empty plate on the bedside table.
I laughed and nodded. I walked over to pick it up and he stopped me. "It's my dish, just point me in the way to go and I'll take care of it." He said politely.
I was pleased to see at least someone had manners that wasn't of the female variety. I showed him where the kitchen was and thankfully the guys had already headed back outside to work again. We'd never have gotten out of here if they had gotten the mouths running. My mom seemed to have disappeared.
He took care of his dirty plate and we walked out the back door to the garage to get in my truck...yes I know. You must be wondering what is up with all the trucks? Well when living on a ranch and out in the country, a truck is more suitable to have than a car. I have a 1980 ford F-250, and I loved it. It wasn't the prettiest thing, but it gets me to where I want to go.
He said to head back to the auction building and it was on one of the side streets near there. There in front of us was a 1950 Dodge pickup! It was beautiful! I've never seen one in person before. It was a Deep Sky Blue and in amazing condition! I couldn't believe it! Not a spot of rust, not a dent in sight! I was officially jealous.
He saw my expression and laughed hard. I turned to him and stuck out my tongue. He laughed again and opened his door to get out. I did the same and followed him over to the truck.
