The force sent me crashing to the ground. I felt the weight of the car crush my legs. I screamed , but it did nothing to stop the pain I felt in my legs. I tried reminding myself that feeling pain was better than feeling nothing at all. But it hurt so much.
I saw Jacob kneeling next to me. All I could do was scream. It looked like Jacob didn't know what he was meant to do. Then I saw someone else on the other side of me. I didn't know who he was. He must have been the driver. He looked like he was in pain, too. But not because he had any injuries. And then I heard more screams, not my own.
"CALL 911!" someone screamed.
I was surprised I was still conscious. The driver disappeared from my side and called the ambulance. Jacob was still by my side. I was still screaming.
"Kaitlyn I'm so sorry." Jacob said, but it was barely a whisper.
I wanted to tell him it was okay. I wanted to tell him not to worry. I wanted to do a lot of things. But all I could do was scream.
When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics rushed to my side and pushed Jacob away. I screamed, because I didn't want him to leave me. And when I thought the pain couldn't get any worse, it did. The car was lifted up and they pulled my leg out. I saw it, and I screamed even louder. It was covered in blood, and completely out of shape. I was lifted onto a stretcher and put into the ambulance. Then I saw TJ by my side. The only family that was with me. Wonderful.
I had never seen TJ like this before. He couldn't look at me. He turned away and buried his face in his hands.
I managed to stop the screaming. But I really wished I didn't. I couldn't feel the pain anymore. That was never good.
We reached the hospital, and I was immediately flown to the emergency room. I was going to have to get surgery. I felt something jab into my arm, then I was finally unconscious.
*
I woke up to see TJ, Tom and my mother surrounding my bed. Mom squealed.
"She's awake!" She cried, and grabbed me.
I was disoriented. "Mom..what?" I muttered as he hugged the breath out of me.
"Tom, call Doctor Burke!" Mom said.
Tom left, and arrived with Doctor Burke. He was holding a clip board. He didn't look happy. Oh no.
"Kaitlyn, how do you feel?" Doctor Burke asked.
"I... I don't know." I said.
"Kaitlyn, can you remember the accident?"
It flashed in my mind. Jacob's face struck with horror, the blinding lights, the screech as the tyres came to a halt, but it was too late.
"Yes, I remember."
Doctor Burke wrote something down. "Kaitlyn, can you feel this?" He walked over to the edge of my bed and lifted up the cover over my legs. I didn't look. I didn't want to see what it looked like.
"Kaitlyn, can you feel this?" Doctor Burke repeated.
I hadn't noticed he was doing anything. Wait, that meant- oh no. I felt a tear slide down my cheek. "No." I mumbled. Mom gasped. TJ walked over to the corner. Tom sat down and stared at me in shock. Doctor Burke scribbled something else down.
"Does this mean I'm never going to be able to walk again?" I asked, afraid of the answer.
"We can't be sure yet, Kaitlyn." Doctor Burke said. "I'll be back to run some tests. Oh, and there's someone waiting outside to see you." He said, and he left, clutching that silly clip board in one hand. Mom left, and Tom followed close behind her. TJ left, without saying anything, or even looking at me. I was alone for about three seconds, when the door opened again, and my visitor walked in.
