Chapter 8 ~ Justin

Oh man! I have big news! And I mean BIG NEWS! I wish Caitlyn wasn’t ignoring me so I can tell her. I have to tell her. I have to come straight out with it tonight. I don’t even know how I’m going to say it. I mean she’s been ignoring me for like a week. And either way tonight is the wrong night to say it. But I have to; it’s the only way. Whatever, I guess ill figure this out later. I have to enjoy my night.

“You look hot, Justin. You’re gunna be the star of the night. All of the girls will swoon over you,” I told myself as I looked into the mirror. I did look good and I know girls will want to dance with me. But, I don’t care about any of the other girls. I want to dance with Caitlyn, and only Caitlyn, the girl of my dreams. The other girls don’t matter when she’s in my arms.

That sounded really cheesy, but it’s true! It’s totally unlike me but I just can’t help myself! (You see what she does to me??) I wish I hadn’t screwed things up and just asked her to Homecoming (even if it was awkward between us), instead of Jessica. Now, don’t get me wrong, Jessica’s nice and totally hot and all, but I only like her as a friend. Caitlyn is the girl for me. There, I said it. I admitted that I like Caitlyn. My best friend. I LIKE MY BEST FRIEND!

God, I’m such a coward.

“Justin, the limo’s outside!” My mom yelled up to me, interrupting my thoughts.

“Coming!” I yelled back, putting on my sneakers (yes, sneakers. Sorry girls, I don’t have fancy shoes) as I ran out of my room and down the stairs.

Well, here goes nothing.

Jessica and I finally arrived to the school’s gym, where it was decorated for Homecoming. It took a while because my mom was going crazy in the picture department. No joke, she probably took a thousand pictures of the same pose of Jessica and me tonight. We were finally able to breathe when I complained and said that I would miss Homecoming AND prom. In the limo I was able to eye Jessica and see how she looked. She was wearing a black and white dress that had a pattern of diamonds made in beads. Her long brown hair was straight and down. As usual she looked hot but as I said before she’s not really my type. Caitlyn is, Caitlyn is exactly my type.

The theme of Homecoming was Black and White. When you walked into the gym, the doors were decorated with poles that were black and white swirls. When you walked in there were white snowflakes hanging from the ceiling and it was pretty dark with only a disco ball to give off the nighttime effect. The tables had white table clothes with a black runner. Different tables had different centerpieces; the centerpieces include: soccer ball, Yin Yang sign, Dalmatian, dice, penguin, cow, zebra skunk, and many others. (I was seated in table Penguin.) On one wall the Homecoming committee set up at huge target that people could shoot at and entertain themselves. Other entertainment included chess, checkers, and many more! Obviously the food wasn’t really black and white but the dessert was! They had Oreos, black and white cookies, cookies and cream ice cream, cupcakes, and lots of other yummy stuff. The whole place was basically in black and white. It was pretty cool to see how the gym could be transformed into something so amazing in just a few hours. And it was also cool to see everyone dressed up. Many of the people there wore black and white dresses and tuxedoes except for this one daring guy who came in a panda suit.

“Woah,” Jessica said dumbfounded from all the decorations, and probably the panda suit too.

“Yeah. Hey you want a drink?” I asked my date.

“Yeah sure, diet coke with no ice please,” she responded. That’s what Caitlyn gets. Man, I miss her. I’ve got it bad, haven’t I?

“Coming right up!” I said sounding like a waiter.

After I got some drinks we danced a little and then we were sent to our seats to eat and listen to some boring speech the principal gives every year. After eating, Jessica and I played some games and took some pictures together. The whole night I’ve been trying to spot out Caitlyn (I hope Jessica didn’t notice!). And I finally found her sitting on the side looking as beautiful as ever! She’s wearing that white dress we bought together (obviously), with her hair down and curly with a clip on the left side, and white high heeled shoes. I just saw Brian give her a kiss on the cheek before going over to the punch area. I’m going to kill that idiot.

“Look, Justin. I know you’ve been trying to find someone all night,” Jessica starting to say while we were slow dancing, “so who is it?”

“What?” I said trying to cover up exactly what she accused me of doing. Well looks like she noticed. Smooth move, Justin.

“Justin, I’m not an idiot. Unfortunately for me, I can tell you’re not into me and that you’re into someone else. I mean you haven’t looked at me all night! So who is it?” She said looking in the direction I was staring at. I probably shouldn’t have done that, it’s kinda obvious now, isn’t it? “Oh, so its Caitlyn. I knew it! You’re totally crushing on her, aren’t you?”

“What? Are you serious? Me and Caitlyn are just friends!”

“Oh save it, Justin! Just admit you’re in love with her! I won’t care! You guys would be such a cute couple! And I’m pretty sure she likes you back!”

“Really?” I asked amazed.

“Are you blind? Do you not see how she looks at you? She’s looking at you right now!” Jessica asked me surprised. I turned around but Caitlyn turned around the second I looked.

“Go over to her already and tell her how you feel!” Jessica said pushing me in her direction while walking off.

“Hey Jess, thanks!” I told her sincerely.

“No problem! Now go get your girl!”

And I did exactly that! Okay fine, I stalled a little. I went to get some punch and dessert first. I mean I was trying to find out what to say! I was freaking out! I don’t remember asking someone out this hard before. Well I know why, it’s because I’ve never felt like this before, about anyone! Oh man my hands are clammy. I better go over to her before I wet my pants.

“Hey Cate,” I said while sitting next to her.

“Hi Justin, you have some icing on your face,” she told me while wiping it off. Oops, how embarrassing, “what happened to Jessica?”

“Well, she noticed that she wasn’t the person I wanted to go with to Homecoming,” I told her truthfully.

“Really? So who’d you wanna go with?” She asked me curiously.

“Like I’d ever tell you.” I told her teasingly.

She laughed. “Well let’s say I guessed it. How about our old game of twenty questions?” she asked me mischievously.

“Well I guess that would be alright. But could we limit it to five questions, twenty is really tiring,” I told her.

“Ok sure Mr. lazy pants. You know what, how about you say just five facts about her.”

“Ok. Fact number one, she has long brown hair and is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.”

“Well, that narrows it down to like everyone in the room,” she said laughing, “go on.”

“We share the same favorite snack and I give her a pizza with extra cheese and French fries on top whenever she’s sad or angry,” This is the first time I’ve seen her quiet for this long. I think she figured who it is.

“I occasionally call her kid as a nickname,” I continued.

“She has a birth mark shaped as a poodle,” Well if this isn’t obvious I don’t know what is.

“And last but not least – “

But I was cut off because Principal Sathers was about to announce Homecoming King and Queen. That woman seriously needs to get her timing straight! I was just about to say that I liked Caitlyn and now I have to wait even longer to find out if she liked me back!

“Homecoming Queen is……………..Alexandra James!” Principal Sathers announced. Alexandra was walking onstage with a huge smile plastered on her face with everyone clapping in the background. She thanked everyone and then said some more annoying things. I wasn’t really listening; I was just hoping that the Homecoming King isn’t me.

“Homecoming King is……………..Justin Davis!” But of course, Homecoming King is me because that’s just my luck these days. Thank you god for listening to my thoughts and completely doing the exact opposite of what I want. So I walked on stage with some sort of smile while everybody was clapping and I heard some of my friends pat me on the back and say, “Congrats, man!”, “Way to go, bro!”, and “Get the goods, Justin”.

Principal Sathers put the crown on my head while Alexandra took my hand and kissed me, yes on my lips that are meant for someone else, in front of the whole school. Seriously, this chick needs to learn body language; hence, my stiff body and awkward side glances. While being in total shock and Alexandra’s PDA, I saw Caitlyn run out of the auditorium. Oh man, how am I supposed to tell Caitlyn I like her now? I don’t think pizza will solve this…

“Those are the end of the announcements, now the King and Queen may share a spotlight dance,” Principal Sathers said. Oh no, I am NOT dancing with Alexandra! She’s probably gunna feel my butt and stuff and I know I’m a teenage guy and I’m supposed to like that and everything, but not from Alexandra. So I did the following.

“Um, ‘scuse me everyone but I would like to make a public service announcement too,” I said, while grabbing the microphone from Principal Sathers. Everyone laughed. “Well, you see there is a little problem. I don’t want to be King if this is who I get as my queen,” I continued while some people gasped and other people laughed. Alexandra stood there motionless. Ha, serves her right! “So I’m abdicating the throne.”

Then I ran out of the auditorium trying to find Caitlyn and praying she hadn’t left yet. In my haste, I took off the crown and put it on Brian’s head while he responded with “Oh shiny!”

I saw Caitlyn outside in the pouring rain, probably waiting for her mom to come or something. She looked depressed, and it saddened me to know that I probably was the cause of it.

“H-hey Cate,” I stammered.

“Go back to your girlfriend, Justin. Now I know who you wanted to go to Homecoming with all along. It was Alexandra! Even after what she did to me to had the nerve to go back with her. And you did all the stuff that we do together! Just leave, it would be best for everyone,” she said going from angry to sad.

“No Caitlyn,” I told her firmly, “I’ve waited so long to tell you this and that stupid kiss that meant nothing is not going to change that! Well, first I didn’t get to finish my last fact back there.”

“Justin, I already know its Alexandra no need to hurt me even more,” Caitlyn said turning away from me.

I turned her head to face me and sat next to her on the bench in the pouring rain. “No Cate, you’re wrong. I don’t like Alexandra and in fact I hate her. My fifth fact was that the person I really wanted to go to Homecoming with is my best friend. Yes, that’s you Caitlyn! I’ve always liked you, even if I didn’t always know it. I’ve been trying to find my perfect girl when she was right in front of me all along! I dated so many girls and broke up with each one of them and thought that something was wrong with me, but now I realized that it was a sign saying I was choosing the wrong girls. But now I understand, Caitlyn I’m choosing you and I’m waiting for you to say that you’re choosing me back,” I told her. Everything just spilled out of me, everything that I’ve been holding in for so long and it felt so good to just come out with it.

Caitlyn just sat there speechless and I was starting to freak out. I don’t think I remember a longer moment in my life. Maybe she doesn’t like me. What were you thinking Justin? Seriously you’re just-

“I’ve been waiting for you to say that for forever,” Caitlyn said kissing me. Oh my god, Caitlyn kissed me. And she’s not running away. This is the best moment of my life, Caitlyn holding me and kissing me. Her lips on mine feels so right and good, I can actually stay here forever. Yes that would be nice. But she pulled away, Ugh. I would’ve liked dying of no air from just kissing her. But Caitlyn hit me on the arm instead.

“Ow, what was that for?” I asked confused.

“That was for thinking you liked Alexandra! And for keeping your feelings from me this whole time!” Caitlyn said annoyed.

“Well you did the same thing! But I’ll just let it go,” I told her smiling. But there was still that thing creeping in the back of my mind. I have to tell her. Oh man, if she hit me for not telling her that I like her, she’s going to do something way worse when I tell her this.

Caitlyn was about to start kissing me again and as much as I wanted to kiss her with all my might, I had to get this out of my mind, once and for all.

“Look Cate, there’s something you should know.” I started to tell her.

“Ok, shoot,” Caitlyn said looking nervous. She had every right to be.

“Today I was coming downstairs and I saw my house filled with boxes in place of furniture and, well, to make a long story short…I’m moving,” I told Caitlyn in a rush. She stood there motionless, in shock, and looking like she was about to cry and pass out. I knew exactly how she felt.
