Chapter Nineteen

Days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months and I was on my last month of my pregnancy. I was sharing a little pink and yellow cottage in the country with Jack and Gene where there was a little stable where we kept chickens, pigs, and horses.

Gene started at a new school and settled in nicely and I made a few new friends. Jack quit thr army and became a journalist for a big newspaper company near where we lived; And I stayed at home cleaning, ironing, knitting baby clothes and fed the animals.

Jack would come home around six o' clock in the evening and cook dinner for us even though he'd have work to be getting on with.

One evening Jack and I had dinner together alone because Gene had gone round a friend's house to stay the night. He cooked us fried chicken in a creamy white sauce with asparagus and baoiled new potatoes, which was absolutely delicious. There was two lit candles on the table while we finished eating.

"Wow, Jack, that was absolutely delicious, thank you," I said, dabbing the corners of my mouth with the brown napkin. "But you didn't need to go to all this trouble just for me."

Jack smiled at me in a different way that I hadn't seen since we were kids. I recognised that smile. It was the smile cheeky smile he'd used to charm me and shared my first ever kiss with. He leaned closer to me and took my left hand in both of his hands and looked deeply into my eyes. His dark hair had grown and was now long enough to touch the tops of his ears. His right hand went inside his trouser pocket and slowly brought out a small black velvet box making my blue eyes wide with surprise. He got down onto one knee and opened the lid to the box and reveal a sparkling carot gold ring then gazed at me lovingly.

"Zoe Smith, from the day I met you down at the beach I fell in love. And when we could not see each other again I was devastated. Not once have I ever stopped loving you, caring about you. Will you marry me, please?"

My eyes filled up with fresh tears of happiness and smiled through the tears while nodding my head. "A thousand times yes," I said. I loved him too, very much. From the moment we shared our first kiss. I guess deep down in my heart I have always loved Jack Pascal.

Jack's big, brown hazel eyes lit up like stars of happiness and slid the ring onto my engagement finger on my left hand and then helped me to my feet. He swung me around, we both laughed happily. He cupped my face in his hands and kissed me hard on the lips. "Oh, Zoe, you've made me the happiest man in the world. I love you so much," he said, caressing my right cheek with the back of his hand.

I gazed deeply into his eyes and my heart melted and found myself falling helplessly, hopelessly in love again with the boy - the man I shared my first kiss with. They do say you never ever forget your first love and that is absolutely true. I kissed him and Jack kissed me back pulling me up to my feet taking my hand in his and leading me upstairs to the bedroom where couldn't stop the passion between us any longer. We kissed each other with pure love, passion and lust taking our clothes off and ending up on the double bed.

Jack and I looked at each other and we both smiled happily as he gently lowered himself down on top of me his manhood hardened against me and then slowly and gently entered inside me.

We made passionate love like never before. He kissed me in places that made me moan out with pleasure; the bedsprings creaked loudly as our lovemaking got more intense as I gritted my teeth. Jack and I climaxed together which made, as soon as he rolled off me to the other side of the bed, my water break.

"Jack," I said worriedly. "My water just broke. You need to take me to the hospital now the baby's coming."

Jack got to his feet and quickly put his clothes back on and helped me put my clothes back on as well. He took me gently by the arm down the stairs and out the front door to his van after he shut the door. Jack helped me up into the passenger seat then got in and started up the engine and drove away fast to the hospital.

We arrived outside the nearest hospital called, 'SOUTH CORNWALL HOSPITAL', and Jak stopped the van and then helped me out into the hospital.

"We need some help here, please, my fiancée is having a baby," Jack cried to the nurses who were behind the front desk.

The two nurses in blue dresses hurried to my side and helped me into a wheelchair and wheeled me into the labour ward with Jack close behind.

I had my hands on my enormous pregnant stomach and panted heavily as they wheeled me into the labour room and helped me into a blue hospital gown sitting up in a hospital bed.

Jack held my hand as he sat on the chair beside me while we waited for the doctor to walk in.

Within ten minutes a middle aged doctor in his mid-fifties in a white coat came walking into the room and had a stethoscope around his neck.

"Hi, Miss Smith," he said with a friendly smile as I nodded my head. "How long have your contractions between? How many minutes between each one?"

"They haven't started yet. But I hear they're really painful," I replied just before my first contraction started. "Ouch! That hurts!" I screamed as another one came a bit more painful than the last.

"Let's just have a look how the baby's doing," the doctor said, putting the stethoscope on my belly to listen to the baby's heartbeat. "It's definitely on its way, Miss Smith?"

"I know it's coming," I snapped. "My water broke." Feeling shameful for the way I spoke to the doctor I apologised just as another contraction came and I screamed gripping Jack hand tightly. "Has anyone rung Gene to let him know I am at the hospital?"

"I have," replied Jack. "I rang his friend's house and spoke to the mother and explained and she said she'd bring Gene straight here."

I closed my eyes with great relief that someone had told Gene where I was even more relieved that it was Jack who'd done it.

The door opened a second later with Gene walking in and came to my side. "Zoe, is everything, OK?" he asked with a concerned look in his eye as I screamed out once again.

"She's having the baby now, Gene," explained Jack.

"Probably be best if you both step outside and wait," said the doctor to Jack and Gene.

Jack glanced at me and saw sweat dripping down my face then brought my left hand to his lips, "do you want me to stay?" he asked.

"It be best if you take Gene outside and wait," I said, when I saw he still looked worried I added, "I'll be fine," I smiled.

Jack nodded his head not convinced and then kissed me on the lips. He walked out the room with Gene.

Sweat dripped from my forehead all the way down my face as the contractions got even tighter.

The doctor, midwife, and the two nurses were by my side holding my hands as I pushed.

Tears ran down my face, "I can't do this, I can't do this!" I cried over and over again.

"Yes, you can, Zoe," said the doctor firmly. "Come on now, push!"

I pushed my hardest squeezing the nurses' hands tightly as I screamed in agony.

A few hours had gone by and I still was in labour. The contractions getting more and more painful each time.

"Almost there, I can see its head," said the doctor cheerfully to me who stood in front of me.

I sighed with great relief. "Could Jack be here with me?" I asked. I needed him by my side.

The doctor nodded and one of the nurses went out and called Jack back inside and the nurse stayed with Gene in the hall.

Jack came in taking my other hand in his and we stared into each other's eyes that were filled with love for one another.

"Come on now, Zoe, Push!" said the midwife who was standing at the end of the bed with her hands gently on my baby's head. "Push!"

I pushed and pushed and screamed until there was this beautiful, delightful sound of my baby crying. I threw back my head against the white pillow and sighed with relief it was all over. I looked up again and watched as the doctor cut the umbilical cord with a pair of scissors and then passed the baby to the midwife who wrapped it up in a white towel. She came over and gave me my baby.

"Congratulations, Miss Smith, you have a boy," said the midwife with a smile.

"Thank you," I said happily holding my son in my arms. I stared down adorably at his tiny little dace and kissed his head gently.

"He looks just like you," commented Jack, kissing my cheek.

I smiled even more.

The door opened and Gene walked in, "Zoe, he's beautiful," he said. "My little nephew."

The midwife and the doctor left the room but the two nurses stayed to watch over me and my baby.

I stayed in hospital for another two days so the doctor and nurses could see how well me and my son was doing then I was allowed to take my son home with me.

Jack drove us back to our pretty pink and yellow cottage in the countryside and it felt so good to be home.

I held my baby in my arms as I walked out into the beautiful back garden of the cottage with flowers growing everywhere. It looked lovely; the sun was shining brightly but there was a cool breeze in the air that lifted up my blonde hair. I closed my eyes and raised my face up to the sky feeling the cool breeze across it. A smile spread across my face as if my Cousin Devon, my lover for a short time, was right there beside me caressing my face with his hands gently.

"Zoe, honey, would you like a cup of tea?" called Jack from the kitchen.

"Yes, please, darling, thank you," I replied.

"OK."

I knew right there and then that I was going to call my son Devon, after his father. I looked down at him sleeping cosily in the pink blanket in my arms and kissed the top of his head gently. Happy with the decision that I was going to call him Devon I walked happily back into the kitchen and kissed Jack on the lips taking him by surprise.

"Wow, what was that for?" he asked.

I grinned happily at him, "just that I'm the happiest woman alive and that I love you," I said.

Jack came to me at the table and looked deeply into my eyes and I stared back into his. "I love you too with all of my heart." We kissed.

"I was thinking I'd like to call my son Devon, after his father," I said with slight nervousness.

He moved his hands away from me a bit and grew very silent and then stood up and walked over to the sink and rested his hands on it.

"Jack? Speak to me," I said, beginning to get worried.

Jack slowly clenched his strong fists and then released them and slowly turned round to face me. He stared at my very concerned face. "If you want my sweetheart," he said dryly. "I'll go along with whatever you want." He forced on a smile then came over to kiss me and wrapped his strong arms around me.

"I love you, Jack, with all of my heart. But I loved my Cousin Devon as well and I thought it be nice idea to remember him by calling his son after him," I said firmly. "Do you understand? I have to be completely honest with you, Jack, I will always love Devon but I love you more. My heart, body, and soul are yours completely."

Jack knelt down to his knees and kissed me and then kissed my son then looked back to me and smiled. "And you are also my heart, body, and soul forever."
