Chapter Three

I had settled back home nicely in my old bedroom back in St Tintagel, North Cornwall. I had met my grandmother's old boyfriend from college called Mr Harris who seemed a charming gentleman who seemed to be an intelligent man as well as handsome. He seemed to be taken to my grandmother after all these years. His cool blue eyes hadn't moved away from her when he came round for dinner a couple of days ago while Gene was round a friend's house.

A few days later, Mr Harris picked Grandmother Maxine, Gene and I from our house and took us into town in his black car to the movie theatre where he paid for all of us to go and see a Cary Grant film called, 'Arsenic and Old Lace'. A comedy about two old ladies living together in a pretty white house who would invite old bacholar men round for tea and poison them.

We walked into the small and dark movie theatre and took our seats. I sat next to Gene.

The film started rolling.

Half way through the film I felt a pair of cool blue eyes staring at me from the side. But I just carried on watching the film and laughed out loud in some places that were hilarious; Even Gene laughed.

We all laughed through the remainder of the film and Mr Harris dropped us off back at the house. I said goodnight and thanked Mr Harris for taking us to see the film. I noticed his eyes stared at me like in the movie theatre so I turned and went upstairs to check Gene was in bed while Grandmother Maxine said goodnight to Mr Harris.

I entered Gene's small room with toys everywhere and found him lyin in bed asleep on his side. I went over and kissed him goodnight on the cheek and then left. I went to my bedroom and got ready for bed. But I couldn't shake the memory of Mr Harris staring at me, it made me feel a bit on edge.

I had fallen asleep when Grandmother Maxine came up to check on me to see if I was alright.

I awoke the nect day by the sound of Grandmother shouting out to me from the bottom of the stairs. "Zoe, Gene and I are going into town to get some stuff. Do you wan anything?"

"No, thanks, Grandmother," I shouted back.

"Okay, see you later."

With that I heard the front door opening and then closing.

I got out of bed and walked over to the window and watched as Grandmother Maxine drove off in her car. I quickly got dressed into a pair of long black shorts and a white blouse that I tucked into my shorts. I slipped into my white canvas shoes then I ran down the stairs without closing my bedroom door like I normally did. I ran out through the front door shutting it behind me. I jumped onto my bike and began to cycle down towards the beach that was sign posted down a green valley.

A private part of the beach which only the people who lived in the valleys were allowed to come on the private area of the beach. That was only two families - My family and the Pascal family.

I cycled fast down hills with twisting bends to get down to the beach. I stopped for a moment and gazed across the ocean with admiration of the blue - green water. The waves crashed up against the black rocks spraying loads of seawater. I began to cycle fast again down the hills until I finally came to the beach.

I lifted my legs off the bike and began to walk to the private area. It was a small cove with a big bit of crystal white sand to sunbathe on. But because it was the beginning of autumn it was a bit cold to sunbathe much. The sun was high in the blue sky shining brightly down. I leaned my bike up against grey wall and put the bike stand down.

I sighed and seated myself down on the white sand and stared out to sea. I saw two seagulls floating out on the surface of the water fighting over a worm or something. A few minutes later I stood up and took a good look around before taking al of my clothes off and ran into the sea completely naked!

I began to swim on my back and closed my eyes as I just let myself drift along the ocean top. A few minutes later my blue eyes burst wide open and I was shocked to see an older boy swim on his back coming towards me. I felt angry because this boy was trespassing on private property and felt rather flushed because there was a naked boy present and I was as well.

"Excuse me," I said angily, startling him.

The boy went under and then rose to the surface choking out a bit of seawater from his mouth. He looked angry. "Who the hell are you?" he said angrily as we circled each other.

"Me! I yelled, surprised. "I should be asking you that exact same question. Who the hell are you? And what gives you the right to come onto a private beach owned by the Pascal and Smith family."

The boy smirked at me with humour in his green eyes. "I am one of the Pascal boys. I'm Jack Pascal, Mr John Pascal's son," he said.

I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment.

"Well, well, well, looks like you've got nothing to say now."

"I'm sorry, I didn't know who you were Mr Pascal's son. Forgive me," I replied, nervously. I quickly swam back to shore and quickly put my clothes back on.

"Hey, it's no big deal," he said as he stepped out of the sea as well and put his clothes back on. I turned away. "You can look now."

I turned back round and Jack Pascal smiled at me and I found myself smiling back. Our eyes were locked onto each other taking each of our appearances in and liked what we saw.

Jack wore a pale blue long sleeved shirt, a pair of grey trousers and black shoes. I was smiling at his lovely wet dark curly hair than ran downt he sides of his beautiful olive skinned face. Jack had a small dimple in his left cheek when he smiled.

"I have to go, my grandmother would be worried I'm not there," I said quickly, reaching down and grabbed the handles of my bike tightly.

He nodded his head in understanding.

I rode the bike back up the hill when I heard Jack cycle up to catch up with me on his own bike.

"Why don't I see you off at home and then maybe we could meet up sometime," he suggested softly as we cycled sie by side up the hill.

My heart was screaming out, YES, YES. Wait until I tell Laura, Bethany, Crystal and Liz when I get back to school. They're going to be so jealous of me going out on a date with a handsome boy.

Jack and I cycled back up to my house and I offered him in to have a cool drink and something to eat but he said he had to help his Pa fix the car up.

"Jack, I'd like to meet up with you," I said and we both smiled.

His big brown eyes met mine and he stuffed his hands in his trouser pockets. "So, I'll see you tomorrow then?" I nodded. "Same place or do you want to go somewhere different?"

"That sounds great," I said. I turned away and opened the front door. "I'm Zoe by the way."

"Zoe, such a pretty name for a pretty girl."

I blushed.

"How old are you?" Jack asked stepping forward.

"Fourteen," I replied.

"I'm seventeen," he said.

There was a silence between us but there was attraction there. He smiled and I smiled.

"See you tomorrow, Zoe," Jack said, grabbing his bike and began to cycle away but looked back and waved.

Once Jack was out of sight, I leaned my bike at the side of the house and then rushed inside feeling as though I was on cloud nine. It was best day of my life. Nothing or no one could spoil it for me.
