"I'm sorry Jason." I said and gave him a gentle hug. He shrugged away from me.
"Yeah I'm sure you are." he picked up his backpack and walked away. Another one bites the dust. I walked back to my friend Savanna and sat next to her.
"Well?" she asked.
"He's pissed but what's new?" I scanned the cafeteria for my new prey. The new guy who didn't know about my game, Beverly Payton, whohad just moved here from Montana about a week ago. And that boy was fiiiine. He was shy and nervous - who wouldn't be? - but I could tell he had it in him to be a real bad boy. And I wanted in his bad girls club.
I spotted Beverly walking in through the front dooors and bounced up. "Watch my bag again Savie." I said over my shoulder as I made my way over to cut him off.
"Will do." Savanna called, but I could tell she couldn't care less. Savanna was on of those people that you have to get used to. She had an attitude bad enough to win a metal if there were an Olympic sport called 'Who can have the baddest attitude?'. Savie would take home the gold every time. She wasn't what most would called a cheerful person to be around, about the only color she wore was black and sometimes subtle hints of purple. She had long dark brown hair that fell to her waist and was usually pulled back in a sloppy ponytail. And I was about the only person who knew her secrets.
But that's why I loved her. She put up with me and my crazy antics. And right now I was having a crazy moment.
I stopped in front of Beverly and smiled my 'Hey sweetheart. Love me?' smile that got me a lot of places in life. He stopped and stared.
"Hey." I purred.
"So listen, I know your the new kid and all but I just wanted to tell you that if you ever need anything, I'm here."
He gave me the same look Savie gave me a lot. 'The Why should I care?' look.
"Thanks." he pushed past me and started to walk away.
"Wait! Do you maybe want me to walk you to your first class?"
"No thanks. I can walk myself." And he went.
Huh. That didn't go as planned. Usually all I had to to was smile and say hello and guys melted into my hands. Beverly was going to be a hard nut to crack. But I was also a very successful nut cracker. Two could play this game.
I walked back to the table Savanna sat at and picked up my bag. "Come on."
She stood and picked up her bag. "Where?"
She rolled her eyes and headed to class, withme close on her heels.
At lunch, I watched Beverly pay the lunch lady for theinedible French bread boat then head to a table with the few friends he had made sitting at it. He still hadn't been cracked. We'd had science together second hour and had to do a lab. I asked Beverly to be my partner but he shook his head and went to work with his table partner. Why was he being so difficult?
"Earth to Alexa." my friend Lauren said, waving her hand in front of my face.
I looked at her and sighed. "What?"
"You were staring again."
"Duh. He's ignoring me! I don't get it!"
Savanna snorted. "Maybe you need to give it a little longer. Maybe his penis just isn't ready to be..."
"I get it Savie."
"Appetite, gone." Lauren threw her sandwich back in the bag. She always brought a lunch from home so she wouldn't have to eat the gross cafeteria food. Lucky.
I looked back at Beverly and watched him eat his food and talk to his friends. When he stood to throw his trash away, I noticed just how tight his jeans were. Damn he was hot... and apparently under the influence that he was untouchable. Not in my house baby.
"So why are you so interested in Beverly anyways, Alex? He's way out of your league." Lauren said.
I made a sound of disagreement.
"Prove it." I challenged.
"Oh please." Savie jumped in. "Look at the guy. He's wearing guyliner for Christs sakes. You couldn't get him to go to a movie with you, let alone get his hands in your pants."
She'd be surprised what I was capable of. But I didn't get a chance to tell her that because the warning bell rang and she walked to class. Now I had another shot to get Beverly. His friends cleared away from the table but he stayed. After lunch was his off hour so he either stayed the cafeteria or went to the library. I walked up to him and tapped his shoulder.
"What?" he said without looking up. He had his science book open in front of him and he appeared to be doing his homework.
"Getting the science homework done? Good call." I smiled.
"Uh huh." still he didn't look up. I'd have to try harder.
Finally he looked up at me. "I'm doing homework. Why don't you go to class?"
Grief that boy was cranky. "Actually," I said, sitting next to him, "This is my off period too." Total lie but it got him to pay attention.
"I don't believe you." the second bell rang, signaling the start of class. Oh well. It was only French I was missing. Big whoop.
"Well you should 'cause it's the truth."
Beverly rolled his eyes and went back to his homework. I should proabaly do my science homework too, but I wasn't going too.
"So, you taking health this year?"
Oh come on. My two year old sister said more than that. And she could barely say my name. "Me too. I have Sanders, next semester, 6th hour."
"Fascinating." Beverly said sarcastically. Okay, now he was getting on my nerves.
"Alright, I'm done playing. Admit it, you like me."
He looked up again with a peeved look in his eyes. "I barely know you. But I do know you have a boyfriend and I'm tired of being flirted with. I don't want a girlfriend, especially one already in a relationship. Thanks, but no thanks."
Crap. He knew about Jason and thought we were still together. "No no no, you've got it all wrong. Jason and I broke up."
"Uh huh. Still not interested. Go to class, Alexa."
"Fine. Your loss." I stood and walked away.
