I know all stories begin with “Once upon a time…”, and then end with “…they lived happily ever after.” Well, this isn’t one of those stories.
It all started when Landon became my boyfriend six months ago. We held hands and that was it. Then one night he kissed me, which was fine except that it kept building until one night we couldn’t stop it.
A month later I found out that I was pregnant. Me! Ms. Don’t-do-anything-wrong-always-perfect had become pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. How do I tell people this? Of course I have to tell people, in a couple more weeks it will be obvious.
I called my best friends.
“Hello?” answered my best friend Tia.
“Ti?”
“Yeah?” she responded.
“Hold on, I don’t want to have to say this twice,” I said waiting for my other best friend to answer.
“Hello?” my best friend, Kat, said answering the phone.
“Hey, Kat.” I said.
“What’s up, Bry?”
“Guys, I’m pregnant.”
There was silence, and then I heard laughter. “Nice one, Bry,” Tia said trying not to laugh.
“I’m serious, Ti. Land and I got carried away, and now I’m pregnant.”
“Does he know?” Tia asked.
“No, and I don’t want him to.”
“He has the right to know,” Tia said trying to persuade me.
I remained stubborn though as I said, “I cannot bring him down with me; I love him too much.”
“He’s responsible too, Bry,” Kat piped in.
“I know that, but I’d rather have him break up with me than have him despise me and our child.”
“Bry, do you really think that Landon would despise you and your child? Have you seen the way he looks at you?” Kat said encouragingly.
I almost bent until Tia said, “Have you noticed that he always leaves when you come into the room?”
“You’re not helping, Ti!” Kat exclaimed.
“I have noticed that’s why I don’t want to tell him,” I said ignoring them.
“Bry, I really think that you should…”
“Me too,” Tia said cutting off Kat.
“Please promise me guys,” I begged.
“Okay, Bry,” Tia said relenting.
I could tell that Kat was struggling with her answer. “Me too,” she sighed defeated. “You do realize that the baby will probably look like Landon too, right?”
“Yes,” I sighed, “I know.”
“Well, I gotta go,” Tia said hesitantly.
“Yeah, me too. You know that we love you, Bry. We just want what’s best for you,” Kat added.
“Yeah, I know. Bye, guys.”
I hung up the phone and then picked it back up and dialed Landon’s number. Maybe he isn’t home. Maybe he hates me. Maybe he won’t ans-“Hello?” came over the line disturbing my thoughts.
“Hey, Land.”
“Bry.”
“Landon…” I started.
“If you’re calling about “our night”, I’m sorry. I don’t ever want to remember it.”
I swallowed hard to get rid of the lump that had formed there. “uh…actually not “our night”, but my night with Ben.”
“Ben?” he asked detached.
“Yeah, a college guy.”
“Bry, we are in college.”
“Oh, well. What I’m trying to say is that…I’m pregnant!” I blurted out.
He was silent, and then he asked, “From Ben or me?”
“Ben,” I responded as positively as I could.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Of course I’m sure! It’s my body.”
