Holland Taylor glanced at her watch and tapped her foot faster. Late! Why was she always late? Holland jumped when she felt someone come up behind her.
She turned around and saw her best friend Jayson Reeves. “You’re late, Jay,” Holland pointed out.
Jayson grabbed Holland’s arm and looked at her watch, since Jayson never wore one. “I’m only one minute late, Land. Gosh, you are a perfectionist.”
Holland huffed, and then said, “Are you ready?”
Jayson smiled and said, “I was born ready.” Jayson hooked her arm through Holland’s and they walked arm-in-arm into the school theatre.
They sat down in the second row and waited for their choir teacher to arrive. They were auditioning for Beauty and the Beast.
The auditions passed quickly, now all they had to do was wait for the posting. The girls went over to Jayson’s house.
“Hey, Jay, I’m gonna order a pizza,” Holland said grabbing the phone. When she hit the TALK button, a voice came over the phone. Holland was about to hang up when she heard her name. She lifted the phone back up to her ear and pushed away her guilt.
“Why are we talking about her, Jacky?” said a feminine voice that had a definite pout.
“I don’t know…I’ve been thinking about her lately.”
            “But, Jacky…we’re dating.”
“No, we’re not. You broke up with me, Kala.”
            “B-But…”
            “No, I think that I like…”
“What are you doing?” Jayson asked coming up behind Holland.
Holland jumped and the phone fell to the floor.
Next they heard Jackson yell, “Jayson, were you eavesdropping?”
“No,” she yelled back. “I was gonna order pizza, but I’ll call on my cell.”
Jayson picked the phone up off of the floor and hit the END button, and then she looked at Holland accusingly.
“What?” Holland asked trying to sound innocent.
“What?” Jayson mimicked. “Holland Elizabeth Taylor, you were eavesdropping!”
“Not on purpose,” Holland said blushing with guilt. “I heard my name and well…”
Jayson sighed and said, “I’ll order the pizza.”
Holland heard Me and My Gang coming from her pocket. She pulled out her cell phone and said, “Hey, Land.”
“Hey, sis,” Landon said. “What are you doing later?”
Holland groaned. “Land, you have another date? You just dated Jess Sunday. You can’t be on another girl already. Besides who will I go with?”
            “Go with Cam,” Landon said.
“Land, I’m beginning to feel like I’m using him.”
            “He doesn’t care…”
“No, but Alex sure does,” Holland said referring to Cam’s girlfriend. She sighed and asked in defeat, “Who is she?”
            “Thanks, Hol…And, it’s Miss.”
“What?” Holland yelled to the dead air. Holland closed her phone in a daze. Ugh! I hate it when he does that!
The doorbell rang in the distance, and Holland faintly heard Jayson say, “Land, the pizza’s here.”
Why would he pick on Miss? “Jay, Landon asked Miss out.”
“So?” Jayson said around a mouthful of pizza.
Holland grabbed a piece and said, “So? He asked out my best friend, besides you, and it’s freaking me out.”
“I don’t know. Come on, Friends is on,” Jayson said pulling her over to the couch.
            “Here’s your Pepsi.”
“Thanks,” Holland said twisting the top off. “I’ll pray today.” She closed her eyes and said, “God, please bless this food to our bodies and help with the play. We love you, Lord. Amen.”
Holland savored her pizza as she bit into it, but her joy soon vanished when Jayson didn’t eat.
“Jay?” she asked worry etching her face. “What’s wrong?”
            “It’s Josiah.”
“What’d he do now?” Holland asked with disgust.
“He didn’t do anything…yet. I think he’s gonna break up with me.”
“He’d better not,” Holland said her big sister nature surfacing.
“I don’t know, Land. I’m so confused. I love him, but I’m wondering if that’s enough. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like it’s enough, you know?”
Holland got lost in thought thinking about her own experience with “love.” Jesse Rogers had been her boyfriend and love hadn’t been enough to keep their relationship together. She was jarred out of her trip down memory lane, when Jayson shook her. “Huh? Oh, sorry, Jay.”
            “What were you thinking about?”
Holland blushed and ducked her head. “I was thinking about Jess.”
Now it was Jayson’s turn to groan. “Land, I thought you were over him.”
“So did I,” Holland barely whispered.
“Oh, Land, we’re gonna grow up to be old maids,” Jayson said dramatically.
Holland smiled and said, “You are over dramatic.”
Jayson laughed and said, “You’re probably right.”
Holland sobered and said, “About Josiah, I’m not sure what you should do.”
“Me neither. We should swear off of boys,” Jay said.
“That’ll be the day,” Holland said laughing again. She glanced at her watch and said, “I gotta go.” They hugged and then Holland left.
