I sat Peyton down in the high chair as Reese ordered for us. I’ve never had something so expensive in my pocket. These things were crazy expensive to someone from the middle of nowhere. My family grew up on no one having phones other than my mom. She needed it in case someone had an emergency. Hospitals were only for when you were about to die, Mrs. Meyer was for the rest. To have a phone that had a touch screen phone that cost more than a lot of things in my house was crazy. “What are you thinking about?” He asked when I sat down in the booth.
“Just things.” He raised his eyebrows. “What?”
“Are you still upset on the phone?” I looked down pulling it out of my pocket. It was sleek and when I clicked the top button a I jumped as the screen lit up.
“I just don’t get why it had to be this one. It’s just so much money.” He leaned over the table to take my hands in his.
“Halyn, please, that is nothing to me. A drop of water taken out of the bucket really.” I sighed looking at the phone. To me this was crazy, to him this is nothing. “Please?” I nodded slowly putting the phone on the table.
“Alright.” The smile that appeared on his face made it worth it. I could accept his gifts if he was going to smile at me like that. Like I was a plant, and he was my sunshine. It made me warm inside. Peyton picking up my new phone and put it into her mouth making me laugh.
“We’ll have to get you a case or two. So it’s safe.” He nodded stroking Peyton’s hair.
“I’ll have to figure out what to do with my car.” I sighed talking a sip of my water.
“Your brother is a mechanic, right?” I nodded.
“One is.” I looked up at him. His wheels were turning, I could tell. He was thinking.
“Well we could go this weekend. I can clear the meeting I had on Friday and change it to Monday. I could work a little from my computer too.” I was just watching him. I know he does this at times. He thinks out loud.
“Reese I need to find a job.” He blinked at me being pulled back from his thoughts.
“Not now. One thing at a time, Baby.” He pated my hand. “Let’s get the car fixed, and then we can deal with a job.” I nodded as the food we ordered was brought over to us.
“How am I going get it there?” Reese gave me a thoughtful look.
“Tow it. It should be too bad. I’ll make a couple calls and get one for the next Friday.” He smiled at Peyton as she put her hands into his French fries taking one. “I’ll drive you around for now.” He smiled at her taking off little pieces and giving them to her.
“Alright.” I sighed. He smiled at me as Peyton giggled biting the fry.
“We’ll take my truck there. Better than the truck.” I blinked at him.
“Truck?” He nodded as we ate our food.
“Yup. I should use it more than I do.” He shrugged. “I might start using it more soon.” I yawned at him. I shook my head. I was too tired for this right now. “You look tired.” I nodded at him. Things can really make me tired.
“I am. You wore me out.” He smiled at me. “Boost to the ego?” He grinned at me.
“A little.” He called over the waiter for the check as Peyton fussed wanting out of the high chair. I picked her up as she put her hands in my left over food. She put the piece of pasta into her mouth. I kissed her head. “Come on let’s get the two of you back home.” He put the rest of my pasta into a to-go container. Peyton laid her head on my shoulder as we walked out of the diner.
“I’m going to call my dad, alright?” He kissed me.
“You don’t need to ask, Halyn.” I watched in the mirror as he took Peyton gently and put her in the car seat in the back of his car. He is the best. I wish he was Peyton’s father. Not him. I pulled out my new phone and dialed home.
“Hello, Meyer household.” A husky voice said into the phone.
“Hey Dad.” I missed talking to my Dad. I’m his little girl, his only girl.
“Hey Baby Doll. How’s it going?”
“It’s better now.” Reese smiled at me as he got into the driver’s seat. “Is Holden there?” I asked as the engine purred as we took off.
“He just stepped out actually. You want me to go get him for ya’?” I scratched my face.
“Nah, just tell him I’ll have the car up hopefully next week.”
“You’re coming up?” I could almost see his smiling face.
“Yeah, just for the weekend. You wouldn’t mind if I brought someone with me as well?” I looked at Reese as he watched me from the corner of his eye. “Other than Peyton.”
“Would this someone be a certain man you’re Moms been telling me about?” I cleared my throat as I blushed.
“So it’s alright?” I rubbed the back of my neck.
“Sure Hally. I’ll tell your brother. So I’ll see you next Friday? As in the next Friday coming up, correct?” I nodded.
“Yeah Dad. I should get going.” I said as we pulled up to the apartment.
“Alright. I’ll see you next Friday. Drive safe. I love you.” He cleared his throat trying to cover up his emotion.
“I love you too Daddy. I’ll see you next week.” I ended the call before looking at Reese.
“You see them soon.” Reese whispered holding my hand.
“I know.” I got out of the car getting Peyton from the back. I smiled at Reese weakly as I opened the door to the apartment. Peyton had fallen asleep on the ride back. It was late and tomorrow is going to be an interesting day. I brought her into the nursery and pulled off her clothes before changing her diaper. I was gentle with her bandages as I laid her back into her crib just in her diaper. She was fall sleep as I turned the lights off leaving the room.
“Hey Baby.” Reese smiled as I closed the door behind me. I walked into his arms sighing.
“Hi.” He kissed me.
“Let’s get to bed.” He sighed stroking my hair. I nodded too tired to argue, not that I wanted to anyway. I stripped off of my clothes crawling into bed. I turned to look at him.
“You coming?” He smirked at me.
“Not yet, but it can be arranged.” He winked I rolled my eyes. I set myself up for that one. He pulled me and the blanket around him. “I love you.” He smiled kissing me.
“Reese…” He looked at me. “Reese, I love you too.” Reese closed his eyes before kissing me like I’ve never been kissed before. One full of passion and love.
“You just made me one happy man.” I felt him shift as I rubbed at his exposed thigh.
“Show me then.” I whispered in his ear as I felt him shutter and harden as my thigh rubbed his…..
I was rushing around getting everything ready as Reese sat on the couch with Peyton on his lap as they watched me run back and forth. “Are you just going to watch me?” Peyton giggled.
“Ma.” She smiled happily.
“Can you just leave for a couple hours?” I huffed at him. I was stressed. Everything needed to be ready and perfect.
“Alright, alright. Come on Cookie, let’s leave mama alone.” Peyton put her hand to her mouth she stared at Reese.
“Take care of her. Pack a bag for the weekend.” I kissed him before hurrying off to go pack everything. Reese smiled walking out with a fully dressed baby in his arms.
“Your Mommy is crazy.” Peyton smiled up at him. “She is.” He kissed her cheeks. An hour later after Peyton had a crawl over Reese’s floor at his house while he packed. He switched the cars to his truck putting in the new car seat he had bought for Pey behind my back. He tossed in the stuffed animals he had bought that Peyton was playing with on the floor before. He pulled up to the park holding Peyton’s hand as well as his laptop in the other. There was a park that was for young kids to play in. There was someone watching always watching. It was a little park open in spring and summer that Peyton loved to go to when I had the money to go. It wasn’t much but when Reese found out she loved it the next thing I know I have a ‘season’ pass.
“Par! Par!” Peyton said excitedly at Reese. He put her down as the people around smiled and waved at her. He sat on a bench working on something for work as Peyton played with another baby. His phone rang.
“Hey, you can come home now. I’m ready.” I sighed. “Sorry for kicking you out.” He laughed at me.
“No problem baby. I’ll get Penny now.” Oh his nickname made my heart swell, to know he cares about her so much.
“Alright. I love you.”
“Love you too.” He closed his lap top looking up as Peyton sat on the pavement playing with toys. The little girl next to her called to her Daddy before running off. Peyton looked around confused as if wondering what she was talking about, watching the little girl. I always wondered if the whole thing with Mikey in Look Who’s Talking could really happen. If babies really think like that. Peyton’s eyes locked onto Reese as he stood up to get her.
“Come on Penny.” Reese smiled as she stood up to walk over to him. She tripped falling making her start to cry.
“Dada.” She cried as Reese ran over sweeping her into his arms holding her tightly to him. He was shocked. Dada? She was calling him Dada? He rocked her gently telling the Caretakers that watched the kids that she was alright. “Dada.” He kissed her wet cheeks. He loves her like a daughter, so why not? He can be her Dada.
“Shhh baby, it’s okay.” She held on to him as he took her to the car. “It’s alright.”
“Dada.” She pouted at him. His heart melted.
“It’s okay Baby, Dada is here.” She closed her eyes as he rocked her before putting her in the truck handing her Ducky. “Mommy wants us back now.” Peyton giggled as Reese winked at her. He pulled up to the apartment as I stood with my and Peyton’s bag.
“Ready?” I asked putting the bag in back. I got used to all of Reese’s expensive things. So the Land Rover that pulled up didn’t surprise me.
“Sure am. The car was picked up before so it’s already on its way.” He smiled me as I heard kicking in the back. He put my bag in the back.
“Ready to see Grandma and Grandpa?” Peyton smiled at me as I gave her the pacifier.
“Mama!” She held up the pink elephant in her hands to me. I looked at Reese raising my eyebrows as Peyton smacked at the new car seat. He shrugged at me smiling. I really had to get used to him buying her everything possible. I sighed looking out the window as the streets passed in a blur. This was going to take a while to get used to.
