I was in the hospital for four days after I woke up and I hated it. I was chomping at the bit to get home to my children and back to life but the doc was too mean to let me go. It was half way into the fifth day when the doc came in and laughed.
"You won't be bothering me anymore, I think it is time you get back home to your family. I do want you to see a therepist though, it will help with the nightmares that you have been having. You also need to finish out your antibiotics and do what ever you can to take it easy for a bit longer. Don't just jump back into work."
I laughed. "You know asking me to take it easy is a really dumb thing to do. I am a single mother of two kids, I don't know the meaning to take it easy. I also have to reaclimate myself to home and make sure that Molly is alright and still able to be of service or if I have to put her back through training."
I heard him laugh right next to the bed and I jumped. "You will still need to take it easy for a few more days. Your body is still healing after all that trauma whether you want to believe it or not. If you don't take it easy you will end up back in here and you won't be able to get out for a while do I make myself clear."
I giggled. "As clear as things can be since I am blind, but I understand doc. I will do my best to take it easy. that is the best that I can give you doc if you want honesty. If you don't, well then I will sugar coat it, lie to you and tell you that I will do everything you tell me."
He laughed then. "Alright, do you have a number of someone that can pick you up, I am not sure if you have your cell phone or if you know any numbers, but I am sure we can come up with something to break you out of this prison. Would that sound good."
I nodded. "I don't know the numbers, but I am sure that they left my cell phone around here somewhere. I honestly can't tell you what it looks like but it should either be near me or in the bag that Rick left here two days ago. Could you have someone check for me?"
I heard him move around and put something on the table. I heard the sound of a zipper and knew that he was looking for my phone. It wasn't long before the bag was dropped and I felt him grab my hand and place my phone in it. "Don't be on it too long. We have a lot of people in here on life support."
I nodded and opened my phone to press my voice button. "Dial Rick." I waited as the phone rung and rung until he answered.
Rick* Just how did you find your phone?
Me* I didn't, the doctor brought it to me so that I could call and tell you that I am being released.
I heard him let out a shout.
Rick* Oh you don't know just how happy that makes me. I will shower real quick, change and come get you. I can't wait to bring you home baby. The kids can't wait to see you either. They have been on about you non stop. Give me about 30 minutes and I will be there.
Me* I can't wait. I will call the nurse in so that I can get a shower and get changed so I will be ready when you get here.
Rick* That sounds like a plan to me. I will see you soon sweetheart.
Me* Alright my dear, bye.
I closed my phone and hit the nurse call button that was attached to my arm. I waited a few minutes and adjusted myself on the edge of the bed as I heard steps get closer.
"Ma'am I am entering the room alright. My name is Dana and I am your nurse today."
"Hi Dana, I need help getting into the shower and if you could also pick out some clothes for me, especially since I can't match them on my own, I would be so greatful. Doc said I could go home, but I would love to go home clean and dressed if that is alright."
She laughed. "No problem." She moved across the room and picked up my bag. "It there anything in particular that you would like to wear?"
I thought for a moment. "Well, if there is a light sundress in there I would be happy. I know that my friend brought me my black flats so something that would look good with them. I hope I'm not being too much trouble. I hate not being able to pick out my own clothes."
"No trouble at all Ma'am, alright how about the multi-colored floor length halter dress and your flats. I will even do your hair before you leave if you like."
I giggled. "That would be wonderful. It has been a long time since my hair has had anything done with it other than be put back."
She walked over to me and put her hand on mine helping me to stand. She led me to the bathroom and handed me the clothes. "Take your time and hit the call button again when you are done and I will grab your brush and do your hair so you look nice. Goodness knows if a guy made me smile like that I would want to look good. You know he stuck by your side through it all, cried we don't know how many times and kept repeating how much he loved you and couldn't live without you. Now go freshen up."
I giggled as I closed the door and turned on the water. It felt so wonderful against my skin that a moan escaped my lips. I washed my hair and cleaned up before I dried off and got dressed. I felt so much more human and alive, the pain in my body had receded and I slowly made my way back out to sit on a chair in heat I could only take for sunlight. I hit the call button again and heard steps as Dana walked in. I heard her laugh as I relaxed in the chair by the window and hummed to myself.
"You know you have such a pretty voice, do you know that?" She sounded so pleased.
"It is one of the few joys I have left. Once I lost my vision, I lost a part of myelf. I still have my hearing, but I won't get to see my children grow up, just hear it."
She ran the brush gently through my hair. "If you don't mind me asking, how did you lose your sight?"
I sighed. "Well it was just over two years ago and I had a tumor pressing on nerves and doing a lot of damage to them. If I didn't get it removed I would have lost both my hearing and my sight. Doctors thought that I would get both back once the tumor was removed, but I never got my sight back. I woke up in a panic that my world was dark and I felt so alone. I had gotten Molly shortly before so I put her through the service training and not only did she become my eyes, but an extention of me. She helps me wrangle the kids in the house when I need her to, she keeps an eye on them and warns me of trouble, she guards the house while we sleep and she helps me while I work."
"Work, what type of job do you do?" She sounded so intrigued.
I laughed. "Before I went blind I was a Camera Operator for the ABC Affiliate here, once I went blind I stayed with my job and just kept them in the dark about my situation. I made certain adjustments to my way of work and life that fit me just fine. My boss didn't find out until two days before the attack, the man that attacked me was my partner at work."
She gasped. "My goodness gracious that is horrible. They said that your attacker was close to you, but wow your partner. That must have been horrible."
I nodded. "I was scared, I had never felt so alone in that moment. I don't remember too much of it but what I do remember, he better hope that he doesn't cross my path again."
I heard her take in a breath behind me. "I'm sorry I know I shouldn't be crying, but it is horrible to have someone you trusted so much do that to you. I'm done now. Thank you for letting me do that. I have to say though that you are a strong woman, you came out the other side not wanting to be a victim like some women do."
I shook my head. "I won't let myself be a victim, not ever. I have everything to live for and I won't let anyone take that away from me. I am lucky that I was able to get that call out or else he probably would have killed me."
"I am glad too, I am glad you get to go home and get on with life. Some women just don't make it out the other side."
"She is much stronger than that, that is why I love her so much."
His voice was like honey and I smiled. "You're here. I am so glad you are here." I stood up and held my hand out. "Dana, thank you so much." She took my hand and I pulled her into me for a hug. "Thank you for everything, for letting me talk and for letting me talk about something I have held bottled up for so long."
She hugged me back and whispered in my ear. "You are more than welcome. Go home and enjoy your family. May your life be blessed with so much more happiness and joy."
I nodded my head against her and felt her pull away. I stood still unsure of where anyone or anything was, but still I smiled. "You look beautiful do you know that. Absolutely stunning."
I felt the blush rise in my cheeks. "Thank you, I don't feel much different though."
I heard his boots hit the floor as he stepped closer to me. He engulfed me in a hug and his clean scent hit me so hard that it shook me. "I love you too."
