It was the weekend and our apartment phone rang. "Belle!" I heard my mom call from the kitchen. I came out of my room, and looked at my mom who had a phone in her hand and a washcloth for my grandma in the other. "It's Myles," she said and smiled as I took the phone and placed it over my ear. "Myles?" "Hey Belle, are you doing anything tonight?" he asked. "Umm, well I have a lot of homework..." I blushed. I didn't know what to say. Myles was asking me out. I wasn't sure if I was ready for this. My mom gave me a death stare. I stared at her back. "Oh...okay well maybe another time-" "But I can finish it within the next half hour so yes." "Yeah? Cool! Okay, I'll pick you up at around 7?" "Sounds good. Wa-Myles." "Yeah?" "You didn't tell me where we are going..." "Its a surprise. Just dress in normal clothes." "Shouldn't be too hard," I said. He laughed, said see ya soon and we hung up. "So what did he say?" mom asked. "Um, nothing much. He's going to take me somewhere at 7." "Hmm..." my mom said out loud. "A date?" "Uh...yeah sure," I said as I headed upstairs to get ready. Myles appeared at the door about a minute late but who's counting, right? I opened the door and he looked amazingly attractive. I must've looked good too because his face lit up when he saw me. "Hi Belle." "Hi," I said quietly. "Ar-are you ready to go?" I nodded and we headed down to what turned out to be a roller skating place. It was student night there so every student with an I.D could get in for free. As soon as Myles and I walked in, I had spotted the majority of our school scattered in different places. We walked over to put our stuff down and Eric instantly waved at us and waked over. "Hey guys, hows it going? I didn't know you two were going out now!" Eric said to both of us. "Oh no, we aren't going out," Myles and I said at once as I shuffled away from him a bit. "Yeah sure, whatever you say. Hey, hurry and get your skates on, we were just about to go out on the rink. "Alright," Myles said as he left. My hands shook so badly as I was putting my rollerblades on that Myles needed to help me. "This is actually my first time at this..." I muttered. "Really? Well, that's okay. There's a first time for everything right?" Myles smiled reassuringly at me. There was something about his eyes that made everything seem so easy and safe. The blue color in them calmed me. I smiled back. We went out slowly on the skating floor and i pretty much sucked at the whole skating thing. Myles was always there to help me up when I fell, and I felt kind of sorry he had to be stuck with such an embarassment. They had songs playing in the background while we were skating and then it went to a slow song and I noticed Myles reaching for my hand. I panicked and used that hand to tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. I could feel him blush at the corner of my eye and look down at his feet. I went faster to avoid any other kind of awkward situation. "Woah Belle, slow down!" Myles said as he tried to catch up with me. I noticed a really talented guy skater in the middle of the floor and got really distracted because it almost looked like Greg for a second. Was it? At that moment, I wasn't watching where I was going so I crashed into someone else and slipped and fell right on my butt. The other person got up and apologized and Myles helped me up. "Hey, whats gotten into you?" "Umm, I don't know. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have gone that fast Myles." "No, it's not your fault. That person just rolled over right in front of you last second anyways." He stopped talking. "Whats wrong?" "Nothing. I-I'll be right back, I have to go to the bathroom." He left and I went the other direction to the concessions counter. There were chairs there so I just helped myself to one. I was exaughsted already. I saw Greg come out of the rink and make his way over to the snack counter. I knew that was him out there! But instead of sitting down, he came behind the counter and took the place of the person working there. I wanted to leave but I knew I couldn't escape now. He noticed me and smiled. I half smiled back, a little astounded. "Hi, don't I know you?" "Yeah, from school, I believe we met. Wait, do you work here?" "No," he said as he pulled out a drink from a fridge and handed it to the costumer in exchange for a dollar. "I just come here to collect money and supervise the dance floors." I couldn't tell if he was being serious or not so I just went along with it. "And you don't get payed for it? Wow, that's some fascinating volunteer work!" He laughed. "You're hilarious. Would you like anything?" I sighed. "Unless you have anything for sore feet, no I'm good." "No, but I would recommend taking your roller skates off it its that painful. Is this your first time skating?" "Well, yeah...I don't know if you could tell but-" "Oh yeah, I could tell." "Excuse me?" "Well, I mean there's a first time for everything right?" He gave that same smile that Myles gave when he said that. "Um, yeah. Well you look like you have that skating thing all figured out for yourself judging by the way you were skating," I said. That took him by suprise. "Oh. Yeah, thanks. It's not like I pick up a few stuff working in a skating rink all day." "Your sarcasm is real charming," I said sarcastically. He laughed and we caught each others gaze for a few seconds. "Although, maybe I can give you a few tips sometime or another." "Oh, I-" and then midsentence I looked up and noticed Myles coming out of the bathroom. Greg seemed to notice too so he just cleared his throat and said,"Well, it was nice talking but I should probably go back to work." "Alright, I'll see ya at school then," I said getting up and wincing as I stepped into my roller blades. "Okay. Hey Belle?" I turned around. "Yeah?" "Be careful." "Of course. I always am," I lied and bladed over to Myles. On the way home, I felt like I had betrayed Myles. Ugh, maybe I shouldn't have even talked to greg. But how couldn't I? That would be rude to just leave and he would think something was up. I mean, he seemed friendly enough. A little sarcastic, but friendly nevertheless. What hurt more was that I was starting to feel something towards Myles. But at the same time, I was starting to feel something for Greg. Myles seems like he really likes me and I think Greg has a girlfriend. So, why would he be talking to me the way he did. Maybe I could give you a few tips sometime or another? That's so obvious. Myles walked with me up the stairs. "Myles?" "Yeah?" "Is everything okay?" "I don't know. Is it?" "Whaaa...what do you mean?" I asked slowly, praying he didn't see greg and I talking. "Well, you just seem so distant with me. I mean, even on the date...well, I was trying to hold your hand, but you didn't seem interested at all." I sighed with relief. "Idk, I guess I just want to know what you're thinking or what you think about me..." he continued to say. We got to the top of the stairs and I stopped him. I looked into his eyes and told him the truth about me. "I'm sorry if you felt that way tonight. I really didn't mean it. I didn't. I guess I'm just scared. Something happened in my life that destroyed my trust in guys completely. Ever since, I've told myself that I wouldn't even talk to or look at a guy." "Wow, that bad, huh?" "Yeah...and I'm really trying, but its hard and its bringing me out of my comfort zone A LOT. But, to be honest, you're the first guy that was actually nice to me. I really did want to hold your hand, but I was scared. I-" "Belle," he interrupted. "I understand. Thanks for telling me the truth." It got quiet and now we were at my doorstep. "Hey Belle, can I ask you a question?" "Sure." "Would you be okay if I kissed you on the cheek right now?" I smiled and he leaned forward and kissed me sweetly on my right cheek. "There's a first time for everything right?" I smiled, and stepped inside, closing the door behind me. But I frowned as I leaned against the door because that phrase was getting a little too old tonight.
