Chapter 4
Showing Bryce around at school was a blast. He made me laugh and giggle. He also made me blush. I felt as if he knew my other half. We made jokes about stupid things and well my eyes couldn’t stay away from his. He would look deeply into me, as if he were looking into my soul. By the time lunch came, Bryce and I knew the major things about each other. We had most of our classes together.
“So where do you sit?” He asked as we walked into the cafeteria. Hayden and Daisy were at the table with a couple of new friends.
Bryce and I walked up to the table and I sat down pulling out a chair for Bryce. Hayden eyed Bryce and Daisy gave me the thumbs up sign, signaling that I did very well with Bryce up to the table and I sat down pulling out a chair for Bryce.
“Um. Okay guys, this is Bryce.” I pointed to identify Bryce, and then looked to Bryce. “And this is Daisy and Hayden.” I pointed to them as well.
Daisy smiled and Hayden looked away. I could sense the tension between all of them. “Bryce and I are going to get lunch.” I tugged Bryce’s arm and he got up with me. Some eyes look at Bryce; some looked at me, but most looked at the both of us. I wonder what they were thinking. “Sorry about that Bryce, I don’t know what it is with Hayden. He has been very,” I paused for a second to collect my thoughts. “Weird with me lately. I’m just sorry that he had to be the same way with you.”
Bryce smiled and looked down at me. Bryce is kind of tall, 5’ 8 maybe, and well he looks down at me, me being 5’2. We walked up to the line and he turn toward me. “I wonder, is he always like that? I mean, I don’t mean to get into your business and all.” He looked away for a second and locked his eyes on me.
“No, He’s not. This is why I’m kind of afraid right now to talk to him.” I said quietly. I looked up at Bryce and he is not looking away again. “So why did you move here?”
“Because, the usual excuse. My dad got a new job.” He rolled his eyes.
“Oh.” The line moved up. I couldn’t say anymore about that topic, I didn’t know what to say. “So, do you at least like it here?”
Bryce didn’t respond quickly. He just stood there looking away from me and for a second I thought that he hadn’t heard me. Then he finally spoke, “I do now.” He turn toward me and smiled. Almost as soon as he turned my way, I felt myself blush.
---------------------------------------
After school, Bryce walked with me to my car and I told him I would talk to him tomorrow. He smiled and as I backed out of the parking, he waved. I blushed again and he walked away.
By the time I got home, mother was out with Laney and dad was nowhere in sight. I ran up to my room and pounced onto my bed. The day replayed in my mind over and over, like a movie I will never get tired of. Minutes later the phone rang. “Hello?”
“Giselle, watch where you go tonight. You may never know, I may be watching.” Click. No more talking. I left the phone next to hear, hearing the dial tone.
I got up from my bed and took out my homework, although my mind only stayed on the voice that had talked to me minutes earlier. I couldn’t go to the beach tonight, could I? I closed my eyes, just thinking about how I feared my life.
------------------------------------
After dinner, I decided to go to the beach anyways but I didn’t walk. I got into my car and drove there. The moon was high in the sky and the night had this misty fogginess to it. The air smelled of water.
I took off my shoes as I usually do and walk onto the beach. The sand was soft and the water was freezing cold. I closed my eyes and for the first time, I was afraid. I opened my eyes again but I heard some footsteps near me. I stayed still, if this was how I was going to die, I am very glad that it is by the beach.
“Giselle?” I turned back, surprised by who was there.
“Bryce?” I heard the sudden excitement in my voice.
“Yea, my parents are up in the car, I told them I would be a little while. I like the beach you know.” He smiled and sat down beside me. “So what brings you here?”
“I like to come to the beach at night. It soothes me.”
“Really? It is very peaceful.” He paused and looks back up at the shore, then back at me. “Are you alright? You seem a little tense.”
“I’m fine. Thanks though.” I felt my eyes swell up just a bit, but I turned before he could see. “I should be going.”
“Oh. Well, can I walk you to your car?”
“Sure.” I smiled, there was no way I could be sad around him. Not if I had a crush on him. “That would be nice.”
“‘I treat everyone nicely, unless they treat me badly.’” He quoted from me.
I smiled and he just stared at me. “Thanks you know, for helping me around school.”
“No problem.” I said to him. We began to walk up the dock when I hear my name. I turn around and see Hayden. He looks at me for a second and I see what’s in his hand. Beer. Bryce waits beside me as I see my friend fall. He is just laughing about it with his friends. “Come on Bryce, Let’s go.”
“You’re a little stupid girl Giselle!” Hayden shouts back at me. Bryce pushes me forward, so I won’t look back. Tears fall from my eyes and Bryce just stands behind me rubbing my back.
“It’s okay Giselle. If he is stupid enough to get drunk then-“
I go into Bryce’s arms, crying. “Thanks Bryce. For helping me.” I cried onto his shirt.
