Prologue:

The sun was shining brightly on the newly-bloomed trees. I laid in the cool, green grass and let the cool breeze send goosebumps up my body. My auburn hair flowed in every direction around me while I sprawled out my arms and legs in the shape of an angel.

I was half-asleep laying in that relaxing sun. Listening to the sound of nature coming back alive from a harsh winter, was so serene to me. Everything was perfectly still...

"Gracie! Where the heck have you been?"

I opened my eyes to where they were only slits and saw my best friend, Matthew, coming up the hill. Matthew had always been a slender fellow but, lately, I'd noticed he looked skinnier. But that didn't stop him from being gorgeous. His ice-blue eyes smiled at me and his almost-white hair shone in the sunlight.

He plomped down beside me and said, "Whatcha been doin up here, Gracie?"

"Sleeping...and thinking." I simply replied.

I felt Matthew's warm touch on my hand and looked down to see what he was doing. There on my wrist, was a beautiful white and pink pearl bracelet! On it, was a little heart charm with my initials carved in.

I raised up and smiled big at Matthew. "Oh Matty! It's gorgeous! Absolutely beautiful!"

He smiled at my approval. "I know your birthday is still two weeks away, but I couldn't wait to give that to you!"

I got up on my knees and wrapped him in a huge bear-hug. "I love you so much, Matt! You're the best!"

He tightly hugged back and pulled apart long enough to say, "I love you too, Gracie! You will always have a special place in my heart. Always!"

"Same to you! Let's go show my mom!"

I grabbed Matthew's arm and pulled him down the hill with me. We were laughing all the way down.

When we got down to the bottom, Matthew scowled and said, "Dang! I forgot my phone up there. I'll be right back!"

Watching him trail back up, I though to myself how nothing could ruin our friendship!
