Chapter 12:

Matt had went back to being his normal, happy self and I just sat there worrying about the chemo. He started it in less than 30 minutes and I wasn't sure what to do. He had asked me to stay with him and, of course, I was going to...but I didn't want to see him in pain.

We heard a soft knock on the door and Matt turned the volume down and said, "Come in." It was a female doctor and David, from the elevator. The doctor's name was Jamie Sparks and she looked to be in her mid-30s.

"Hey Matt! How are you feeling today?"

He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Pretty good...I just feel a whole better after the ventilator." Jamie nodded and had David write what Matt said on a clipboard.

"Well...are you ready for the chemo?"

I immediately looked over at David with a confused look. I thought he was suppose to start later? Not now! David gave me a reassuring smile and winked at me. We all waited for Matt's response and, finally, he said, "Let's go for it."

They hooked Matt up to an IV and had him relax on his back. I stood up and walk over to David. He patted me on my back and knew that I was worried.

"Don't worry," He explained, "All it is, is a medication called cytostatics. It attempts to stop cancer cells from continuing to divide uncontrollably. Now, that he's had his first dose, he'll be checked everyday with blood test and hooked up to a machine to take his oxygen levels."

I leaned closer to David and whispered a simple "thank you" and then walked back over to Matthew.

"Matt," Jamie started, "I'm going to inject the meds into your IV...are you ready?"

He nodded and focused his eyes on me. I hooked my fingers into his and held on tightly. He winced as soon as the medicine was inserted and said, "It burns!"

"I know Matthew...it will subside in a minute, just try to relax." Jamie had finished injected the cytostatics in, and removed the needle. I watched intently, as David took the needle and placed it in a biohazard container.

Matt squeezed my hand as the pain grew more intense and then he was relaxed. His breathing became louder and then he closed his eyelids.

I knew he wasn't asleep because he still had a good grip on my hand. I looked over at Dr. Sparks and David and asked, "So this is what he has to go through every time?"

Sadly, they nodded. "Yes. Until his body becomes use to the cytostatics, he will be in some excruciating pain." Jamie walked out of the room, but David came towards me.

"Here." He handed me a red and white-striped mint and said, "He will probably want that after it's over."

The expression on my face must've gave me away because he continued, "After the session is over, he'll have a really strong metallic taste in his mouth and mints get rid of it."

I smirked and took the mint. "Thank you, David...for everything."

He winked at me again and then stepped out of the room. I looked back at Matthew and saw that he had his eyes open again. He was looking right into mine and, finally, he said

"You like him, don't you?"

I coughed and tried to change the subject. "Is the pain gone?"

"Don't change the subject, Gracie. I know you...I can see right through you! You like my nurse!!"

I started cracking up the way he said that and Matt even smirked a little. I replied, "You're kinda late on current events, Matt. I already have his number."

Matt rolled his eyes and said, "You're too good for him...even know he's making great money! I say go for it!"

Smiling, I leaned up and kissed Matthew on the forehead. He let me and asked, "Are you leaving?"

"Of course not!" I said, "I here for you."

The chemo was finally in his system and he could sit up again. He turned the TV back on while Dr. Sparks was still in the room and turned up the race.

"Whoo!" He shouted. "I was right! Jimmy Johnson did win!"

I just smiled and rolled my eyes, because this happened all the time. He continued, "If we would've betted, I would have some money!"

I nodded in agreement and checked my phone. I scowled when I saw that Justin had txted me...I wasn't in the mood to talk to him, but I read the message anyway.

"Hey, Babe! Just checkin' up on you...you should be pretty sore today after last night ;) haha ttyl"

Shutting my phone, I began getting mad. Justin didn't even feel any remorse for taking advantage of me. He knew I was a prize for him, since I was a virgin.

"Are you ok, Gracie?"

I had not realized that Matt was starting at me the whole time and so I quickly said, "Um..me and mom aren't really getting along right now."

He nodded and replied, "I'm sorry, beautiful. I'm here if you need me!"

I grinned and said, "You better be!"

"Why's that?" His voice had some cockiness in it and he crossed his arm like he was some jock.

Sighing, I said, "Because. It's what best friends do!"

"That's right!"

I laughed and playfully nudged his shoulder, even though I was crying on the inside. There was a possibility Matt couldn't be there if I needed him...because of the cancer.
