"Hey, Gracie!" Matt said when he noticed me. I was shocked at his dramatic change and he realized why I wasn't speaking. "I bet I know what you're thinking...it happened really fast didn't it?"
I nodded and blinked my eyes repeatedly. "S..sorry, Matt. I just wasn't..."
He smiled, "It's ok, Gracie. That's the reaction I was expecting from you! Come sit down." Helen was sitting next to him and Matt looked at her and said, "Mom. Do you want something from the lobby?"
She stood up and crossed her arms. "I don't know why you always make me leave, Matthew."
"Because I want my privacy, Mom. Please."
She sighed and left the room, with the door slamming. I could tell that what has happened to Matt, had really changed her. I sat down where Helen was sitting and said, "No offense, but I don't see how you handle your mom, Matty."
Matt didn't reply. "Matt? You ok?" I asked worriedly.
"Y..yeah..um, there's something you don't know, Gracie."
I leaned forward. "More secrets?" He nodded. I took his hand and looked at him. "Matt, you can tell me anything. I hope you know that I wouldn't tell anybody if you didn't want me to."
He smirked and said, "Yeah I know that. I didn't tell you this before because I didn't want to believe it, myself." He shifted his body to where he was facing me.
"What is it, Matt?" I continued holding his hand...until he told me.
He sighed and said, "Helen is not my real mom....I'm adopted."
What Matt told me hit like a ton of bricks. I started pacing around the room, biting my lip, biting my nails. "What is it, Grace?" Matt asked worriedly.
I didn't answer. My mind was blown at the moment. "Helen isn't your mom?"
Matt shook his head. "Helen and Louis, both, are my adopted parents...have been for awhile."
I couldn't believe what he was telling me. All I could think of was my mom saying, 'You had an older brother...I gave him up for adoption two months after I had him.'
"Matt...when did they adopt you?"
He looked at me with a confused expression and responded, "Helen told me, I was about two months old...why?"
I didn't answer his continuous questions. Instead, I kept asking them. "How old are you again?"
"I'm eighteen...one year older than you, like always. What does it matter?"
I sat back down beside Matt and shook my head. "Impossible..." I murmured.
Matt shifted his body to where he was directly facing me. "Grace, what is wrong?"
I stared at him blankly and simply stated, "I think you're my brother."
I wasn't sure where Grace lived, but I had to find out. She was at school today, and I was worried about her...after all, she was carrying my child.
Instead of asking around, I pulled into the school parking lot at 3:30am to look in the records. I knew the janitors always left the front door open, but the office was locked and surrounded by cameras.
I was wearing dark clothing and I knew the school forward and backwards, so I didn't need a flashlight. I pulled out my lock-picking kit and began working on the main entrance.
After three attempts, I heard the soft click of the lock turning. I quitely entered and saw the red light on the top of one of the cameras.
I moved slowly across the floor and found the student records room. It was locked, also. "Damn," I mumbled.
Again, I pulled my lock-pick out and jiggled it in the keyhole. It was easier than the front door and opened on the first attempt.
There wasn't any cameras in that room, so I pulled out my phone and clicked on the flashlight app I had. "Shit...what is Gracie's last name?" I asked to myself.
I couldn't remember it. Just as I was about to give up, I turned and saw a different cabinet. It was labeled, Student Staff.
My adrenaline pumping, I pulled opened the cabinet and found her file immediately. "255 Old Maple Road." I repeated the address outloud a dozen times and when I was assured it was memorized, closed the cabinet.
Out in the parking lot, I had just settled into my seat when a figure came up to my window and started tapping on the glass.
Thinking it was the police, I rolled down my window and tried to act calm. "Hello, Officer, is there a problem?"
The 'officer' started horse-laughing and turned out to be Jared. "Jesus! Jared, what the hell are you doing here?"
"I need to see your license, registration, and proof of insurance, sir." He said in a mocking tone.
Pissed, I opened my door and hit him right in the groin. He fell to his knees, groaning. "Damn, Justin, did you really have to hit the balls?"
"What are you doing here, Jared?" I knelt down in front of him, waiting for an answer.
He kept cussing at me and groaning, but finally responded, "I can ask you the same thing."
I knew I was caught. I couldn't lie to my brother. "I came here to find out where Grace lives."
Jared stood up and continued holding himself between the legs. "So we have decided to stalk her?"
"No!" I said defensively, "This is the only I could think of finding her address."
Jared snorted and said, "You could've called her."
"Already tried that, asshole. How did you get here anyway? You don't have a..."
He was smiling and getting ready to brag. "I was in the trunk!"
I rolled my eyes and said, "You're retarded. Anyway, I got what I came for...let's get out of here."
Jared shrugged his shoulders and hopped into the passenger side.
"How long are planning on staying with me? Don't you have to go back to the army or something?"
He shook his head. "Nope. I was discharged, remember? I was planning on staying for awhile, bro...catch up with ya."
"Oh God. Save me the trouble." I was shoved by my brother and almost veered off the road. "Hey! Do you want to kill us?!"
Avoiding the question, Jared continued, "Besides, I want to stay to see that hot girl you got pregnant. I think she likes me."
"That's sick...she's carrying my baby. She's off limits."
Jared talking about Grace like that, really boiled me inside. Grace was mine. Nobody elses.
"Whatever. How do you even know she likes you back? I mean, after the way you treated her...I wouldn't want anything to do with you again!"
I ignored my brother the rest of the night. Grace isn't mad at me anymore, I thought to myself. She was going to be mine...all mine.
