We walked into the house and I was completely amazed by the decorations. His house had high ceilings and was brightly-lit in every room. It seemed like the colors they were going for was green and teal...it was everywhere! "Your house is perfect!" I exclaimed. He laughed and took my hand to lead me into the living room.
When we walked in, there were 3 people inside and a dog. "Gramma, this is Nicole...my tudor." The lady Josh call 'gramma' stood up from the couch and walked towards me. For her age, she moved quite swiftly and she still had a head-full of hair.
Instead of shaking my hand, she pulled into a big bear-hug and said, "Welcome to our family, Nicole." This gesture was so sweet to me, because I wasn't use to it. My grandparents could barely speak now, they were so old.
After our hug, his gramma looked over at her husband and scolded him. "Harold! Get up and introduce yourself! Have a little respect, goodness." Josh and I both stifled a laugh as Harold shook my hand. He said, "It's nice to meet you...um...what did you say your name was?" I smiled politely and replied, "I'm NIcole." He smiled and sat back down in his chair.
Josh walked me towards to the third person and whispered, "Button, this is my little sister, Jenny. She's blind."
I didn't even know Josh had a little sister, let alone, a blind one. I began stammering, "I d..didn't even k..know you had a sibling."
He smirked and replied, "Yep. Do you want to say hi?"
I gently nodded as he led me to her. He took her hand and said, "Jenny. It's me Josh...this is my friend Nicole."
Jenny raised up and held her hand out in the air. I gently took it and shook. "It's nice to meet you, Jenny."
She grinned and then replied, "Same to you! Gosh, you're pretty." Confused, I look over at Josh as he mouthed the words: "She had a great sense of humor."
I giggled and stated, "Well, thank you! You're very pretty yourself!" Jenny smiled and said, "Don't lie! I haven't even brushed my hair yet!"
Their gramma then jumped in and stated, "Well, maybe you should do that as we prepare dinner, Jenny."
Jenny, obediently, stood up and said, "C'mon Shadow." Shadow, the golder retriever beside her immediately got up and stood right beside her.
I watched as Jenny grabbed ahold of his collar and he led her up the stairs to her room. I was astonished of how she got around so easily! She definately an inspiration to me!
We all sat at a gorgeous dinner table, Josh on my left and Jenny on my right. Cynthia, their gramma, had fixed a delicious chicken casserole with green beans and rolls. We were laughing at Cynthia complaining to Harold about saving some for the rest of us...since he was on his third helping!
I sat there feeling completely comfortable with this family...feeling like I belonged here. Jenny, then, tapped on my knee and curled her finger for me to come closer.
I leaned towards her and she whispered, "Joshy really likes you."
I smiled and whispered back, "How do you know, Jenny?"
She quietly giggled and replied, "You're all he talks about!"
Josh was curiously looking over at us and wondering what we were talking about. When he asked what it was about, both of us replied, "Sorry, top secret."
Later, Josh and I were the only ones left in the kitchen. We were finishing off our chocolate pie while the others watched a movie in the den.
We sat there in silence until he asked, "Well, do you want to go start that tudoring lesson?"
I laughed and said, "Sure. You lead the way."
Again, Josh took my hand and led me up the stairs and down a long hallway. His room was the last door on the right and when we walked in, I was kinda shocked.
Josh laughed. "We're you expecting it to be messy?"
I smiled and said, "Honestly, yes. I was expecting clothes strung everywhere and no floor to be found..."
He playfully nudged me and said, "I'm not that messy!"
His room was completely tidy with no even a hint of dust on the furniture. His walls were painted dark green and had shelves full of trophies and medals from all his sports. I roamed the room reading all of the engravings on the trophies...that was when I realized his was amazing at what he does: sports.
We, then, sat down on his bed and opened our literature books. I began reading the first act in Macbeth when I noticed Josh wasn't following along.
I raised my head up and smiled at him. "Mr. Princeton, why are you not paying attention?" He grinned and replied, "I can't help it Mrs. Bishop, your beauty is too distracting."
I blushed but it soon subsided and I picked up a pillow and covered my face. "Now, where was I?"
He laughed and pulled the pillow away. "That is not necessary, Button!"
Before I knew it, he was pulling me up onto his lap and holding me around the waist.
"So, you and I both know that we haven't done any studying...what have you been logging in your record book?" He asked.
"Oh. We've already read over Beowulf, and The Canterbury Tales, and now we are beginning The Tragedy of Macbeth." I said in a fake-proper voice.
He chuckled and sarcastically asked, "So, you've been lying to our favorite teacher Mr.Carratine!? Not Button!"
I laughed and gently punched his arm. "Yes. I have been lying to Mr. Carratine. But, only because I, like you, do not want to study! I want to have fun!"
He smirked and said, "Well, Button, fun you shall have."
Josh and I played video games instead of studying and, soon, fell asleep together on his bed.
I awoke before him and checked the time. It was going on 9:30! I jumped up to my feet and accidently woke Josh up.
"What's wrong?" he asked with his eyes still closed.
I was putting my shoes back on when I said, "I was suppose to be home at 8:00!!"
When I had said this, Josh too, jumped up and helped me gather my things. I was rushing out the door when Josh said, "Button, wait! Do you want my gramma to call your mom and tell her our lesson ran alittle late?"
I replied, "No. I'm sure I'll be fine! Will you walk me to my car?" He smiled and said, "Of course."
I said goodbye to Cynthia and Harold and then patted Shadow on the head. Jenny gave me a big hug and commanded me to come back. "I sure will, Jenny. Just so I can see you!" She smiled and merrily let Shadow lead her back into the house.
I was leaning up against my car door, when Josh finally came out there. He had no shoes on and his hair was a mess.
He gave me a soft kiss on the mouth and said, "I had fun today. In fact, I haven't that much fun in awhile!"
I laughed and said, "Me too. I'm glad I conquered my fear of horse-back riding."
He smiled and replied, "I am too. We'll have to do again the next time your over here."
I said, "We sure will! But, remember, we're meeting at my house tomorrow."
He kissed me again and stated, "Then, it's a date, Button. Until then..."
I drove away dreading going to my house. How was I going to explain to my mom why I was late? I pulled in the drive, just as my mom turned on the porch light. "Here goes nothing..." I said to myself as I climbed up the porch steps.
