When we finally reached the entrance to the cave, two sliding doors awaited our entrance. We stepped in and a bleach-blonde, tall, skinny tour guide stood at the front.
"Hi! I'm Zoey. Are you two wanting to take the tour?" Her smile was obviously fake and she talked with too much enthusiasm. Josh looked at me and asked, "Do you want to?"
I saw that Zoey was waiting for a response and said, "Um..yeah sure. Sounds fun!" With that, Zoey beamed and began walking further into the cave.
"Alright, my audience," She started, "we have a new couple with us." There was about 18 of us in the tour and each of them waved or said hi to us kindly.
Zoey walked away, for a moment, but then came back with a key in her hand. "Shall we get in the boat now?"
Confused, we all looked out into the cave, trying to find a boat. Finally, we spotted the tour boat and I was shocked to see how shabby it looked.
"We're riding in that?" I asked hesitant. Josh laughed under his breath while Zoey patted the boat and said, "Oh sure! She may look a little shabby but Bessie, here, is a trooper!"
I was still uneasy about it until I felt Josh's warm hand loop around my waist. I looked up at him and smiled weakly. He whispered, "We don't have to go if you don't want to."
I would gladly take his offer, but I didn't want to look like a coward in front of all those people. "No...I'll go. Will you stay with me?"
Josh smiled and said, "Of course! Every step of the way." I nodded and we both climbed into the boat.
"I can't believe you let them go on a trail by themselves!" April was pacing back in forth in front of Luke.
Luke calmly sat on a rock and rolled his eyes. "April, they have to have their own freedom! Give them space."
"Give them space?! Luke, I made Josh break up with Nicole." April watched as Luke's reaction appeared on his face. He stood up and crossed his arms.
"How could you do that to Nicole? Worse, how could you do that and still make her come on this trip?!" Luke was angry and he began running his hands through his hair.
April sighed and said, "I thought you knew. ...I guess it was wrong of me to make her come, huh?" Luke nodded and replied, "I'm not going to lie to you, April...that was messed up."
"And over here we have these icicle-looking rocks called stalagmites..." Zoey was near the end of her rehearsed tour when Josh poked me in the side.
It was dark in the cave, so he leaned very close to my face and whispered, "Do you still have your mask with you?" Confused, I bent down and pulled it out of the bottom of the boat.
I saw the gleam of his teeth as he smiled and said, "Good. I have your snorkel right here."
Still confused, I asked, "why are you wondering?"
He kissed me on the mouth lightly and asked, "How 'bout we bust this joint?" I smiled a devilish grin when I realized what he was talking about.
"Let's do it!" I quitely placed my mask and snorkel on and when Zoey wasn't looking, we dove into the water.
We stayed underwater for about 10 seconds so any of the other tourists wouldn't see us, then rose back up smiling. I was shivering because the water in the cave was much colder than outside.
"What now?" I asked between chatters. I felt Josh pull me into his arms and hold me close. I stayed like this while he told me what we were going to do.
He said, "I thought it would be much more fun if we took our own tour, instead of listening to Zoey's droning on about stalagmites and fish."
I laughed when he imitated Zoey's voice. "Sounds fun, but where do we start?"
Josh laughed and replied, "How's here?" We quickly dove into the ice water and opened our eyes to the surroundings. The underwater was dark, but our masks had built-in lights.
I turned my own and was astonished at the beauty in front of me. All kinds of fish swam around us while jagged rocks of all shapes came up from the ground.
Josh also turned on his light and, then, held out his hand for me to take. Intertwined, we started swimming in the opposite direction of the boat...to start our own adventure of the underwater cave of Bad Canyon.
