Chapter 31:

"Well this isn't how I thought it was going to start..." I caught my dad off guard by knowing who he was. I was, now, leaning against my car with my arms crossed and watching him try to come upwith something to say.

"Um...how did you know it was me?"

A small smile formed on my face. "Simple. We have the same facial structure...and you have been txting me for awhile, so I knew it would be at any moment. Oh, and usually someone waiting at my car knows me or is a creeper."

He laughed and held out his hand. "I don't think we properly know each other." I didn't shake his hand. I looked down at it and replied, "You're right...we haven't because you left."

His smile quickly vanished and he put his hand down. "Ouch...that stung more than I thought it would." I realized I was being a little harsh, but didn't he deserve it?

He abandoned me...when I was not even 3 years old! "It should sting, Joseph. Why did you leave mom? Why did you abandon me?!"

Joseph started growing anxious. I noticed him kneading his hands and running them through his hair. Finally, he replied, "I guess...I wasn't ready to be a dad."

Knowing it would hurt him, I stated, "Obviously." Shock was plastered all over his face and he began stammering. "I..I thought maybe y...you would want to h..have..."

"A relationsip with you?" I asked, "Don't you think it's a little late for that?" Surely, he knew he wasn't going to win me over after being gone this long!

Defeated, he nodded and said, "Well...I'm glad I got to see you, Nicole. You're just as beautiful as your mother...and definitely have her personality." He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a card. Continuing, he said, "Uh..here's my number. I hope you'll give me a chance and call me."

I took the card and when he walked away, I threw on the ground. Climbing into my car, I began growing more and more angry. I wasn't going to give that man any of my time.

I had been through enough heart break in my life when he left...I don't need it again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I got home, Luke and my mom was sitting on the couch watching a baseball game. I knew Luke was into baseball, so my mom was watching it for him.
"Hey, honey! How's Josh?" My mom's question was just to make conversation. I knew she wasn't really concerned about him.
Walking into the kitchen, I responded, "He's fine. They released him today."
Luke spoke up and said, "That's great! I'm really glad he pulled through." Luke's voice told me that he actually cared about Josh, and deep down, I wish my mom did too.
I went into the living room and stood in front of the TV. "Mom...when you have the time, I need to talk to you about something."
Luke muted the TV and my mom replied, "We have time now, honey. What's on your mind?"
I glanced over at Luke and then stated, "No offense, Luke...but this is a conversation between me and my mom. I'll just go upstairs and you can call me down when you're ready."
Without waiting for a response, I quietly left the room and climbed up the stairs. In my room, I sat my phone down on the table just for it to start buzzing again.
It was a txt from Josh.
"Hey, Button! I couldn't wait for you to call me any longer :) What's up?"
I wasn't going to respond right at that moment, so I sat my phone back on the table and went to remove my makeup.
My phone buzzed again and I decided to answer him.
The txt said:"Hey! Are you awake, beautiful? ;)
Instead of txting him back, I called him. As soon as he picked up, I said, "I saw my dad today."
"Wow...um...hello to you too?"
I rolled my eyes and replied, "Sorry. Hi Josh. How are you feeling?"
"Good, baby. So...you saw your dad, today?"
Crashing onto my bed, I said, "Yeah...it was really awkward."
"I bet. What did he say to you?"
I closed my eyes and replayed the conversation from earlier. "He wants to have a relationship with me...now."
Josh was quiet for awhile and then said, "Huh. What did you say to that?"
"I basically told him off. When he said he wanted a relationship with me, I told him it was too late for that."
Josh chuckled and exclaimed, "That's my Button!" He broke out into a full laugh and I smiled as I listened.
Softly, I said, "I'm so glad you're ok."
He stopped laughing and replied, "Me too. Where's this coming from?"
"I don't know. I was just laying here thinking about how I almost lost you...and that I wouldn't be able to hear your laugh again."
I heard Josh shift in his bed and wince as he moved. "Well don't you worry, Button. I'm not leaving you and you'll get to hear my laugh more often!"
"Glad to hear it!" I heard a knock on my door and my mom peeped her head in. "Luke's gone. Meet me downstairs?"
I nodded and told Josh that I had to go.
"Alright, baby," he said, "I love you! With all my heart."
Blushing, I responded, "I love you too! With everything in me."
I sat down in the chair opposite of my mom and waited for her to ask me what was so important.
"Well. What's so important that Luke couldn't hear?" She sat on the couch with her legs crossed and her hands in her lap. I could tell she was upset with me for making Luke leave, but I'm sure she would understand once I told her.
"I saw dad today."
