My mom's reaction was exactly what I was expecting. She stood up and began to pace my bedroom floor. "What did he say to you?" She demanded.
"He basically told me the reason he left and wanted to build a relationship with me."
Her pacing stopped and she looked at me with a serious expression. "Did you accept?"
"What? Of course not! He abandoned us, mom! He doesn't deserve that luxury!"
My mom's reaction took a complete turn and she began yelling at me, "How dare you deny your father! Why would you do something like that?"
"Because I don't want anything to do with him! I hate him!"
My mom held her hand up and moved towards me and I continued, "Go ahead. Hit me...I didn't stop you before...I won't stop you now."
She paused and put down her hand. I could tell she was trying to gather together her thoughts, but she ended up throwing her hands up in frustration and walking out the door.
When I knew she was downstairs and seated, I grabbed my keys and wallet and climbed out my window. I wasn't going to stay there tonight.
Settled in my car, I began crying. Never in a million years, did I expect my mom to stick up for my dad. He was a deadbeat dad!
Hopefully, I remembered how to get to Josh's in the dark. I sped through town missing every redlight, doing rolling stops, and not signaling. Very reckless, I know, but I needed to get to Josh right then.
I pulled into the driveway and saw that the living room light was still on. Relieved, I stepped out of my car and walked towards the porch.
Neglecting to change, I was still wearing a hot pink tank and navy blue boyshorts as pajamas. I softly knocked on the door and, after the second time, Josh came to the door.
Josh had sleepy eyes. I didn't realize how late it was, until I saw his face and bedhead. "I'm so sorry, Josh...but I need a place to stay tonight."
He checked around the house and then grabbed my arm and pulled me in. "I'll always have a place for you, babe, but that doesn't mean my grandparents will. We'll have to be quiet."
The playful smirk on his face made me giddy and I nodded excitedly. Josh began acting like a ninja and I had a difficult time not laughing.
He held out his hand and I took and he led me to his room. Memories flooded my mind, as I remembered the first time coming in here and seeing his room. I awoke from my memories when I heard Josh close the door behind him.
"Am I sharing a room with you?" I felt awkward asking that, but it would technically be our first time sleeping together purposely.
He shook his head, smiling. "Of course you are! If I put you in a different room, my grandparents would find you for sure!" Josh plopped down on his bed and patted a spot for me to come sit beside him.
I made my way over there and he, immediately, put his arm around my shoulders. "I like the pajamas, by the way...very hot."
"Oh...well glad you like. My mom doesn't even know I'm gone and I didn't have time to change. I wanted out of there!" He rubbed my shoulder and replied, "I know you did. Listen, if you ever need a getaway car...I'm your man."
I laughed. "You'll be my man whether I need a getaway car or not!" Glancing at his alarm clock, I realized it was going on 1am.
"Are you tired?" Josh's voice was soothing and I loved having him so close to me. I shook my head no and Josh grabbed the TV remote from his side table.
He started flipping through the channels and stopped on a channel that was showing 'Finding Nemo'. I started laughing.
"What? This is a great movie!"
With that, we laid in his bed, our hands intertwined, and watched 'Finding Nemo'. Around 4am, I felt my eyes drooping and curled up against Josh's chest. He turned the TV off and pulled me closer. "Goodnight, Button. Sweet dreams!"
Barely awake, I replied, "Goodnight Josh. I love you."
A knock on Josh's door startled me and I raised up from the pillows. Josh was asleep on his stomach with his hand still gripping mine. I gently pryed his hand away from mine and walked to the other side of his bed.
Whispering, I said, "Josh...there's someone at your door."
The knock came again and, this time, Josh woke up and looked at me serious. "Get in the closet."
At first, I was going to object...I didn't want to be in his closet. God knows what's inside there! "Hurry up!" Josh urging me to get into his closet was getting more intense, so I finally sauntered over to the closet and shut the door.
I pressed my face to the closet door to hear who was at the door. The knock came again and I heard Josh holler, "Just a second!"
The sound of the door creaking open alerted me that Josh had let the person in. "What is it, Grandma?"
So Ellen was at the door. I wondered if she would actually be upset that I had spent the night here, but decided not to come out just in case.
I heard her voice. "Josh...Nicole's mom, April, was on the phone. She's wondering if you've seen Nicole any?"
My mom surprised me on how fast she found out of my disapperance. I prayed that Josh wouldn't give me away and also that my mom wouldn't call the police.
"I haven't seen her any, Grandma. I was suppose to meet her later."
His grandma sighed and stated, "Well..I was hoping you had, because she said if you didn't she's filing a police report."
For real?! I wasn't even gone for 24 hours! Defeated, I turned the knob and pushed the closet door open. "Here I am!"
Josh looked at me surprised, but Ellen was beaming. "Ha! I caught you," Ellen said, "I knew that would getcha out of there!"
Stunned, Josh stared at his grandma forever and finally said, "You tricked us."
"Sure did! I heard the front door open last night and heard your voices all night!" Josh put his hand on his forehead and shook his head. "That's not right, Grandma."
Ellen started laughing and patting Josh's arm. "Don't worry. I told her that it was my idea and she's ok with it...as long as you go home right now."
I nodded and grabbed my keys from the table. I hugged Ellen and thanked her for covering for me. "You're welcome, honey. Remember the cookout's tomorrow."
"I won't miss it!" I exclaimed.
Josh walked me to my car and kissed me goodbye. "Atleast she wasn't angry."
"Who? Ellen or my mom?" I asked.
He held me in his arms and replied, "Both."
I smirked and kissed him on the cheek. "I'll txt you later. I love you."
"I love you too."
I walked through the front door and was instantly struck by my mom's hand. I fell to my knees, holding the side of my face. "Jesus, Mom!"
She towered over me and said, "I can't believe you, Nicole! How could you do such inexcusable actions?!"
I looked up and saw that she hadn't hit me with her hand, but instead, a wooden spoon. With tears in my eyes, I got up and tried to make it to my room, but she grabbed ahold of my arm, hard.
"Where do you think you're going? To sneak out again?" My mom's actions were scaring me and tried to release her grip, but she held on.
"Let me go!" I started panicking and began kicking and screaming. At that moment, Luke entered the door with groceries and saw our battle unfolding before him.
"Whoa! Whoa! April! Let go of her!" He ran over to us and grabbed her away from me. When he pulled, she dug her nails into my skin and scratched my arm all the way down.
Blood started coming up from the wounds, but I didn't care. I grabbed my keys and ran out the door. Outside, I heard my mom yelling at Luke and for me to come back into the house...but I wasn't coming back.
A/N: Hi guys! This is a very dramatic chapter and for some of you a shocker! I know you weren't expecting her mom to act that way, but in the next chapter you'll find out why her attitude changes so quickly and how Nicole is going to handle it. Thank you so much for reading and commenting and sticking with this whole book :) I love reading the feedback and appreciate the time you spend to post! Hope you enjoy! XD
