I woke up with a bittersweet feeling inside me. Today, was the last day of my junior year but the beginning of an amazing summer. I looked at my phone and saw that I had three txt messages...all from Malcolm. The first was at 4:40 am: [Good Morning, Nicole! :)] That was sweet, a little early..but sweet. The second one was at 6:05 am: [Hey...sorry about that first message. I realize now that that was pretty early lol] I laughed at that one and then the third was at 7:45 am: [Hey I was wondering if I could pick you upand take you to school this morning? I understand if you dont want to..] I did need a ride so I replied back a simple yes.
He pulled up at my house around 8:00 and knocked on the door: big mistake! My parents kept him in the living room and asked him a million questions like what he likes to do, if he plays any sports...then they gave him the dreaded "she my daugter--protect her!" speech. I finally saved his life by coming downstairs, grabbing my stuff, and saying "Mom and Dad. You're going to make us late." They got the hint and let us leave.
"I am so sorry about that!" I exclaimed. He just kept laughing and replied, "It's ok. They're just looking out for you." I laughed at that response, but deep down I knew he was right. Before we got to school, he stopped at a convient store and bought us some coffee and doughnuts. I passed on the doughnut but definately took the coffee. I had to have a cup of coffee every morning. "Thank you, Malcolm;" I said. He smiled and said, "You're welcome, Button." I wasn't expecting him to call me that. Josh is the only one who hadevercalled me that...and he will be the only one who will call me that. "Um...Malcolm, I prefer you calling me just Nicole." He gave me a confused look but it soon subsided and he gave me a simple, "ok."
Finally, I looked out my window and saw our high school. He pulled in right beside a very familiar-looking, blue truck and we awkwardly stepped out. I was wondering why I recognized that truck and figured it out when the driver got out. It was Josh...and his girlfriend. I could tell Chloee didn't want to be in my presence, so she kissed Josh and walked away with some of her girlfriends. By the look on Josh's face, I could tell he was wondering why I was with Malcolm. He came over and high-fived with Malcolm and then looked over at me and said, "How are you this morning, Button?" I smiled but on the inside I felt genuine sadness. I glanced over at Malcolm and he had no expression on his face. I replied, "I'm good, Josh. How 'bout you?" He grinned and said, "I'm ready for summer."
The day was slipping by, surprisingly, fast. Before I knew it, I was in 7th period with Josh. We were going over the last bit ofMacbethnotes when Mr. Carratine came over to our group. "Mr. Princeton, do not forget about your plans this summer." Josh gave Mr. Carratine a smug look and said, "I haven't forgotten, Mr. Carratine. Trust me." I didn't know whether or not that was a good thing or a bad thing, but I let it slide. Nothing could ruin this day...nothing.
The last bell of the year rang and I quickly grabbed my things and left. I heard Josh saying my name, but, for once, I didn't want to wait for him. I just wanted to go home and wait for tomorrow to come. I was having a difficult time getting through the crowds of students and, once, our big line-backer, Richie, knocked me down. He didn't even turn around to make sure I was ok! I felt somebody's hands wrap around my waist and help me up to my feet. I turned around and saw that it was Josh. "Hey, I saw you get trampled. Are you alright?" I was super embarrassed but tried to keep my cool. I said, "Yeah...I definately know that Richie will do good this year in the playoffs." This got Josh cracking up. "Well, here...let me help you get these." He bent down and reached for my books. I replied, "No...I got it." I didn't think it would happen but it did. We bent down at the same time and when we raised up, our lips locked...
