CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
It was finally the day for my check-up and I was glad it had gone quickly. I hadn’t formed any baby bump yet but I knew I would sooner or later. I rolled over and looked at Simon who was still deep asleep. I smiled before I started poking him. I was glad the morning sickness had settle down majorly and I didn’t wake up every morning throwing up. I poked Simon again and his hand quickly grabbed mine. I laughed and tried to get away but failed. Simon looked at me and smiled.
“What’s the time?” Simon asked.
“Nine-thirty. We have to get up now because the appointment is three hours away.” I laughed.
“But I don’t want to get up!” Simon whinged.
“Well, you have too.” I smiled, kissed his forehead and headed for a shower.
Once I was done in the shower I got dressed and went downstairs to see a shirtless Simon talking to Louis. Mum had to go to work and she was devo’d about not being able to come today. Louis smiled at me and pushed me a cup of coffee. I sat down and joined in with the conversation.
“So, yeah. I will be going for two weeks and then back for two weeks.” Louis said,
“What are you on about?” I asked.
“I’m going to go work in the mines so I get more money.” Louis smiled.
“The mines? But that is so far away!” I whinged.
“Yeah I know. But getting paid thirty-five an hour is good dosh baby doll.” Louis said.
“True. It is good money. I would go work the mines if I could.” Simon said.
“How are you even going to do that? I thought you were gay?” I giggled.
“Of course I am but it won’t stop me from working there.” Louis smiled, “I’m going for a shower.”
“Enjoy!” I smiled.
After about two and a half hours doing nothing, it was time to go. Simon grabbed the car keys and we headed out the door. The drive to the doctors was silent but it was that peaceful silence that you enjoy. I stared out the window and my hand went to my stomach. It hadn’t hit me yet that I am carrying a living human in my stomach. It may just look like a jelly bean at the moment but I already had a strong love to it. Simon and I weren’t even saying ‘I love you’ to each other yet. We arrived at the doctors and got out. We walked inside and I told the lady at the desk my name. She told us to sit down and wait for my name to be called. I sat down next to Simon and his hand laced through mine. We hadn’t told his parents yet that I am pregnant and I was kind of scared to tell them but they have to know. It is their grandchild inside of me. And it always takes two to tango.
“Nina Davison.” Dr Samson called out.
I got up with Simon behind me and we walked into his room. He told me to lay on the uncomfortable bed and lift up my shirt.
“How has everything been since I saw you last Nina?” Dr Samson said as he fiddle with the ultrasound machine and put the goo on my stomach.
“Everything has been good. My morning sickness has settled down.” I smiled.
“That’s great to hear. I have a lot of mothers to be and fathers to be coming in saying it gets worse. I have some fathers say they are feeling sick when their girlfriend or wife is pregnant.” Dr Samson laughed.
“Glad it isn’t me.” Simon chuckled.
“Don’t jinx yourself, son.” Dr Samson smiled.
“God, I hope I didn’t.” Simon laughed.
“Ah, there we go. There is your little bean.” Dr Samson said.
I looked at the screen as he moved the thingy around. And there he or she is chilling back. Tears welled up in my ears as I watched and then I heard a sound that sounded like a train going along it’s tracks.
“What’s that sound?” I asked.
“That sound is the heart beat, love.” Dr Samson said.
“The… The heartbeat of him or her?” I said shocked.
“Yes, it is. A healthy heartbeat at that.” Dr Samson smiled, “I’ll just make sure everything is fine and then you will be good to go.”
Dr Samson looked over my stomach to make sure everything was going fine and soon he gave the all clear and we had to come back in three weeks when I was fifteen weeks. Dr Samson wiped the goo off my stomach and off we went. I made an appointment and left. Simon had this smile on his face that wouldn’t go away at all. I had never seen that smile on him in all my life. I smiled at him as we drove to Mum’s office. When we got there Mum met us outside as we were all going out for lunch. We followed Mum to a little café called Blue Pokka Dots. It was a cute little café. We got out the car and headed inside and sat at a table.
“So, how’d you go today?” Mum asked.
“Everything is good, the baby is growing good.” I smiled.
“And we heard her heart beat.” Simon said.
“Her?” Mum asked, “You don’t find out the gender until fifteen to eighteen weeks.”
“Oh no, we don’t know the gender. I have a feeling it’s going to be a girl.” Simon smiled.
“Do you now?” I laughed.
“Yep sure do. I think it’s definitely going to be a girl.” Simon said.
“What do you think it’s going to be?” Mum asked me.
“I don’t really know.” I laughed, “What do you think Mum?”
“I have to agree with Simon.” Mum smiled as the waitress came to take our order.
We ordered our lunch and chatter amongst ourselves as we waited.
“Have you told your parents yet, Simon?” Mum asked.
“Not yet. But Mum has invited Nina over for dinner Friday night.” Simon said.
“Well, that works out good. Because I have a date on Friday.” Mum said.
“A date, you say?” I asked.
“Yes, a date.” Mum blushed a little.
“Who is this mystery man?” I asked.
“His name is Jethro Harden.” Mum said.
“Will I get to meet him? Oh wait, what time is the date?” I asked.
“Six-thirty.” Mum replied as our food came out.
“Well, I am not leaving until I meet this guy. He better be nice.” I pointed my fork at Mum, “Where’d you meet him?”
“He is a gentleman Nina, I wouldn’t go out to dinner with him if he wasn’t. And I met him at the office.” Mum said.
“So he came in looking for a house but ended finding a date, ay Mum?” I said and I heard Simon chuckled.
Mum blushed, “Nina, people weird in a weird way. How’d you Simon meet Nina?”
“Well, she was in my role class. Then I was leaning against her car, she told me to get off it, I said something about it and called her baby doll and she legit told me off. That’s we met.” Simon said and I laughed.
“You told him off Nina for calling you baby doll?” Mum said.
“Well, that and because he was leaning on my car.” I laughed.
“And now look at you. You’re a pregnant and you both are dating.” Mum noted.
“Yeah we are.” Simon said.
I thought about it for a moment and Mum was right, it was obvious of course, but I hated him with everything I had. But now, I think I love him and he loves me back. I would have never thought those months ago. But here we are, I am pregnant and he is my boyfriend. Life has gotten better.
