Chapter 9

Lacey’s point of view

After Suzanna had finished helping me dress she pointed me in the right direction she ran off towards the kitchen. “Just do down the corridor and you will come to a bit stair way, the great hall is at the bottom of the stairs.”
I thanked her and then walked down the corridor. It didn’t take very long until I found the big stair way. I stood on the top step and looked down at everyone.
The room was full of people standing around and talking to each other. The room was massive and the table was a ‘U’ shape which stretched around three side of the room. In the centre of the head table there a big wooden chair that was covered with intricate designs. And on either side of it there were two smaller chairs with the same wooden designs covering them.
I tried to take a deep breath before I walked down, but the air got caught in my throat when I found I could expand my lungs enough in the corset. It was so tight that I could only take small breaths in and out.
I took a step down the stairs, looking down at my feet to make sure not to slip. When I reached the bottom step I looked up, only to find everyone in the room looking at me. Everyone had turned and was staring at me; I scanned the room and saw Calan stood next to the biggest fireplace I had ever seen. Stood next to him was Thomas and he had a beaming smile on his face, Calan looked shocked as he stared at me slightly open mouthed.
I smiled at him as he slowly walked towards me through the crowd of people, who were still looking at me.
“Lacey…” Calan whispered taking my hand in his. “…you look…beautiful.”
I looked shyly up at him, “Thank you Calan…this dress is so pretty.”
“Yes…yes it is.” He didn’t look down at the dress though; he kept his eyes looking into mine. I broke the contact first and looked down; Calan cleared his throat and then spoke again. “Come and sit, the food is about to be served.” Still holding onto my hand he lead me through the crowd and over to the head of the main table. He sat in the big chair and I sat in the chair to the right.
I sat down and then Calan sat down. As if it was a signal to everyone, people from around the room went and sat down. There was a chair for everyone and when no one was left stood up, double doors that were along the back wall opened up and a steady stream of servants walked in carrying plates full of food.
When all the food was set out and the servants went back out the way they had come, Calan stood up and raised his goblet up. The crowd silenced and looked up at Calan in anticipation.
“Welcome everyone and thank you for all coming. We are here to celebrate a new visitor to our castle, Lacey here will be staying with us for some time, and so I hope you all make her feel welcome here.” He sat back down and everyone started talking and eating.
It must have been about an hour later and everyone was still talking and enjoying themselves, and there didn’t seem to be any sign of people leaving anytime soon.
Calan leaned over to me, “Would you like to go with me on a walk around the gardens?”
I looked up at him and smiled, “Sure.”

The gardens were beautiful, it was starting to get dark but everything still looked wonderful. Me and Calan had been walking next to each other now for a while just enjoying the quiet night. When we arrived at a small fountain surrounded by bushes and flowers, Calan stopped walking along next to me, and sat down on the edge of the fountain.
“Come over here and next a moment.” He said softly. I walked over to and sat down next to him.
“It’s beautiful out here Calan, thank you for showing it to me.”
I looked up at Calan to find him looking at me, “Your welcome Lacey, I knew you would love it and I could tell that you were feeling a little overwhelmed in there with everyone.”
“It’s alright, I’m just not used to big crowds of people. They all seemed very nice though, and friendly.”
He smiled and I couldn’t help but smile back. He leaned forward and lightly kissed my cheek. He whispered in my ear, “it’s getting late I think we should head back now, everyone has probably left.”
I nodded my head, unable to speak from the shock of Calan’s soft kiss on my cheek. The walk back was a haze and before I knew it we were back, stood at the bottom of the stairs.
I turned to Calan, “Thank you for a wonderful evening Calan.”
“I am glad that you enjoyed yourself Lacey, I will see you in the morning at breakfast…” He leaned down again but this time lightly touched his lips to mine. “Goodnight.”
He turned and walked away before I could say anything.
