As D'Jango cantered around the ring I watched him. He was graceful and his muscles moved under his shinny hide. I don't know what came over me but I slid off the fence. My feet made a dull thud in the sand. D'Jango let out a high pitched winnie as he spun towards me.
"Horses are more afraid of you then you are of them." I remember my mother telling me when she first put me on a horse.
"I'm not afraid of you." I said my voice was weak so I cleared my throat a bit, then I said it louder and with more force.
Stepping towards D'Jango he turned and trotted away from me. I kept after him, not letting him stop or rest. I really didn't know what I was doing but it felt like I should.
It wasn't until 20 minutes later that I noticed that D'Jangos inside ear was turned towards me. It was like he was listening to me even though I didn't say anything.
D'Jango lowered his head to the sand and made and small chewing motion. Like he was eating the air. Stopping in my tracks I turned hearing the screen door from the house opening and closing. I was about to turn back to D'Jango when I felt his hot breath on my neck. I walked forward and he fallowed me.
I turned and looked at the horse. His eyes were filled with trust. I held out my hand and D'Jango lowered his hand to my palm and sniffed it. He lipped at my fingers then pushed his head against my chest.
Didn't Adam say he hated people. He didn't seem to hate me. I jumped when I heard two people talking.
"I don't care Adam D'Jango is going next week that horse is no good for my if no one can get near him." Barry said. They were walking towards me.
"Barry I'm sure I can get him to work with me if you give me till the end of the summer." Adam argued.
"Fine but once 2 months is up he's gone." Barry said.
Adam walked towards the pen and leaned against the fence.
"Well D'Jango looks like you and I have some work to do."Adam said.
I was glad it was dark out as I backed up to the fence and climbed over. D'Jango fallowed me and pawed at the sand when I walked away. I ran back to the house and went up to my room and fell asleep.
When I woke in the morning I dressed in light blue jeans and a blue plaid shirt with a white tank underneath. I then slipped on my boots and grabbed my hat. I came down the stairs and grabbed two apples off the counter.
"Your late for your chores." Wendy called after me as I ran out the door.
Biting into one of the apples, I walked to the chicken coop to collect the eggs. last night Wendy had given me a list of things I needed to do that day. She said she has made me one for everyday. Once I was done what was on the list I could do whatever I wanted.
I was cleaning my 16th saddle when Wendy called lunch. I still had one apple with me so I would just eat that. No one was around so I put down the saddle and walked out to D'Jango
"Hey boy." I said slipping through the rails of the fence.
D'Jango looked up from the pile of hay he was eating and walked over to me. I held out the apple and he took it out of my hand.
"You know he wouldn't let anyone else do that." Adams voice made me jump.
I turned. "Well he lets me."
"So it seems, how did you get him to trust you?"
"Thats my secret." I said smiling.
Adam just shook his head. "Well whatever your doing keep it up. I might have to get you to help me this summer with him." Adam sighed softly. "how much I would love that." He rolled his eyes.
"Well it's good to know you want to spend time with me." I looked at him then gave D'Jango a pat and then got out of the pen.
"Well back to work." Adam said seeing the men come out of the house.
Great..back to work.
