Chapter Four ~ Reconciling and Tension
I just blinked. Then I frowned.
"Er. Right. Savior….um…What savior?"
The boy chuckled. Danny and James continued to glare at him. Natalie just rolled her eyes.
"This is Tony Andrews. He -" Natalie began but was cut off by the Tony guy himself.
"I'm the one who saved you," He said, grinning. I couldn't help but notice he was cute, well good looking at least. Nowhere near Chris though.
"Saved me from what exactly?" I asked, amused. "The almighty hospital? Because if you mean that, then sorry. You sort of failed…"
Tony laughed, coming to sit down by one of the chairs near my bed. He reached out and took my hand. It felt warm and pleasant. I smiled hesitantly.
"Nah. My saving skills don't really reach that far….But I did save you. After your breakup with that guy, Troy, I helped you."
"How?" I asked, now thoroughly confused, my smile fading and turning into a frown. Tony sighed and drew circles on my hand with his thumb. It felt comforting and really good. I was surprised, I don't usually notice when boys did that to me. Hmm, maybe Tony…?
"Actually…I…um…" Tony blushed, cleared his throat and looked down. Natalie smirked as she sat down on the mattress by my feet.
"He was the one who pushed you," said Danny, glaring. I sighed.
These boys. James, Danny, my brother and sometimes Chris, are too over protective of me. It really got annoying sometimes. Over protective brothers who didn't let you talk to boys? Yeah, that's one boy. Try four of them.
Yeah, a nightmare. It took simply ages to get together with Troy. First the test with my brother, then the test with Chris, then the test with my two best friends. It was a wonder he passed at all.
He was so not worth it.
"I would prefer the term 'bumped' since that is technically what happened… I didn't see her!" Tony protested. I laughed while James snorted.
"Oh, really? It's rather hard to miss her bright red hair…even in pouring rain," James retorted, crossing his arms over his chest. Tony opened his mouth to argue back but Natalie was quicker.
"Oh shut up, boys. Kitty is awake and all you do is argue. I swear, you boys sound like us girls bitching," Natalie commented. Danny, James and Tony shot her disgusted glares which she just shrugged off as she got up and pulled a chair to my bedside. Natalie then lifted the comb from a nearby table and started combing my damp hair with a small smile playing around her lips.
"Is that how we met?" I asked Tony, curiously. Tony nodded, his eyes twinkling.
"Oh, yeah. I remember that day. You were crying and I helped you. Then I walked with you to pick up your little sister, Starla," Tony grinned. I felt a stab of guilt. I forgot this guy right after I broke up with Troy. Could life get anymore unfair?
"What got us talking?" I wondered. It didn't much to start up a conversation with me….but it was always interesting to know how it started…
Tony laughed again. He laughed a lot, I noticed.
"I think it was about rain."
"How did we talk about rain?" I asked in surprise. Tony shrugged.
"Well, give me your opinion of rain. What do you think about it?"
"Well…." I said slowly, "I think rain is amazing. Well, generally at least."
"Well, give me an opinion not generally then," suggested Tony. I frowned in concentration. Then decided to give my truthful and honest opinion.
"I guess…um….rain is one of the keys to your soul, I suppose," I said. Seeing the blank looks on Danny and James's face, I continued, "If you want to open yourself up to love somebody and be honest with them, you need to feel the raindrops touch your heart and soul."
"Well done, Kitty. That's exactly what you told me that day. Those very same words!" Tony exclaimed, grinning broadly. I smiled back, pleased with his praise.
"Wait, is that some kind of poem? Cause it still doesn't make sense," Danny said, frowning. I smiled at him.
"Poem? Is it? I don't understand shit from it," James said, sighing and looking to me with blank eyes.
"Jamie, Danny. It means that you need to feel more than what you see. Try to imagine yourself in their shoes and think like they do. Understand what they feel. Let the raindrops touch your heart and soul and clean you," I explained, motioning with my hands. Both of them looked back at me with blank expression. Then with an Oh-I-understand-now-expression. I laughed.
"You guys never really understood these type of things, eh?" Tony remarked, earning disgusted and irritated glares from Danny and James.
"Oh, you two. Behave yourselves," I said, frowning at them. They didn't reply but instead took on glaring at the floorboards. Like they did anything wrong.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Tony was a great guy, but unfortunately he was a great fan of politics. Which was scary, really.
During Tony's sweet and fun presence, I noticed James and Danny barely spoke at all except to give nasty comments or just glare at him. Natalie joined in our conversation a few times but mostly stuck with trying to keep Danny and James away from the danger line by distracting them with a movie.
Tony left at half past nine in the evening, something I was extremely surprised about. Usually visitors only stayed for a few hours at the most. He stayed for practically the whole day! He was there when Jesse, my older brother, arrived with his long time girlfriend, Ruby. He was also there when Melinda dropped in with my little sister, Starla.
She was so big now, my little sister. Her red hair now looked a bit orangey, and her eyes were still as big. She was so sweet when she saw me. She was unsure what to do because I was connected to wires and bandaged. I also had a feeling that she was a little bit shy and that stung a little. Well anyway, Starla and Melinda had to leave because Starla had some sort of school function which they were to attend to.
Tony stayed the longest and when he finally left, Danny and James were grumbling non-stop about him.
The nurse popped her head in and smiled pleasantly at me. "Sorry, Ms. Hollands but visiting time is very much over."
I nodded and the nurse disappeared behind the door. Then I turned my head towards where Natalie was dozing off. James and Danny were packing up their stuff, bickering with each other as they did so.
"I swear, if I find out that you took my-" threatened James.
"I'm telling you, I didn't!" argued Danny. I rolled my eyes.
"Guys, can you hush it up a little?" I asked. Then I smiled. "When's my Daddies visiting me?" I asked, pouting a little. James and Danny turned to me, both hoisting their bags over their shoulder. They glanced at each other and grinned.
"Soon, Baby Doll. Soon," said Danny coming up to me and kissing my cheek. He turned towards Natalie and patted her cheek, trying to wake her up. James made his way towards me and kissed my other cheek, affectionately.
"No need to be so impatient Doll Baby," James said, poking my face with his long finger. I scowled up at him but couldn't keep that face for long. I was really sleepy….
"Mmm?" Natalie mumbled, sleepily.
"Nat, come on. Get up, we have to leave," Danny said, quietly. Natalie mumbled something incoherent and slapped the air where she probably thought Danny's face was. Danny chuckled and then made his way to the bathroom.
"Well, I miss them…" I told James, my eyebrows furrowing together in an attempt to keep myself awake. James paused and then smiled, gently pushing the hair away from my face.
"They miss you too, Doll Baby. Don't you worry. They've just been a bit preoccupied," James said, cringing a little. I noticed that he didn't meet my eyes as he said that. I reached out to cup his cheek and forced him to look at me. As dark eyes met my own, I opened my mouth to ask him about his grudging look -
I jumped in shock at the sudden shriek, my hand jumping to clutch at my heart. James whipped his head around and both of our eyes shot to where Natalie was supposed to be sleeping. In front of her stood Danny with an empty glass in his hand and an amused expression on his face.
My eyes flickered over to Natalie and I couldn't suppress the laughter bubbling up in me.
Natalie's face was drenched with water and her pretty brown eyes were wide with shock and irritation. I put two and two together and guessed that Danny had thrown water at Natalie's face in a rather rude attempt to wake her up.
I smiled as I lay against the pillows and watched James play as peacemaker as Natalie turned murderous towards Danny.
Three friends. They meant the world to me.
I looked up from the book I was reading, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and towards the door. I raised my eyebrows in amusement.
"Whoever is there, you can come in because I know you didn't knock."
"Oh, well. Good enough an attempt, anyway," said the deep voice, poking his head around the doorway and grinning widely at me.
My lips automatically curved into a wide smile and I felt my mood brighten. "Daddy!"
"Hey, princess," said James's dad as he walked in, carrying a bouquet of flowers. Behind him, Danny's dad walked in with a similar bouquet of flowers.
"Hello, angel," Danny's dad said, lukewarm brown eyes twinkling as he set the roses on my bedside table. I grinned up at both of them.
"Papa!" I laughed, my nicknames for them sounding strange yet natural. The door opened once more and James and Danny appeared, looking sleepy.
Both fathers came to stand on either side of the bed and leaned over, kissing my forehead and cheek. I grinned, taking both of their hands in both of mine.
Papa and Daddy took a seat on either side, scanning my face.
Papa is what I call Danny's father. Danny's father, Duke Simons, is someone who I had known since forever in my life. I can't recall my life without them being spread all over the picture.
Duke looked like the exact copy of Daniel, except older and more grey. They had the same features and build. Even their personalities were alike!
That is to say….they loved food. A lot.
James's dad, Kyle Williams, was the exact opposite of James. Besides the obvious resemblance in good looks, hair and eyes, their personalities and the way they present their selves were completely different.
Kyle appeared more easy going and goofy while James gave off the don't-mess-with-me-if-you-like-your-face- kind of impression.
"How are you, princess?" asked Kyle, reaching over to brush my hair back. He held my right hand with his free hand and squeezed it affectionately. I grinned at him.
"Ready to rock and roll!" I declared. Duke just chuckled, engulfing my hand in both of his large ones and bringing it up to kiss my hand.
"You haven't changed at all, angel," Duke said, smiling gently down at me. I shrugged at him.
"Well, I didn't know that I was supposed to change…"
Duke smiled. "Of course you're not supposed to. But when we heard about your condition, we just assumed. So sorry for not visiting you earlier, angel," he said, apologetically. "We were preoccupied."
"Dad was busy with his book. He's just published his newest book
and he's going on a tour in a month,"
piped up Danny from where he leaned lazily against the door frame. I blinked and then turned to a grinning Duke.
"Oh, wow, Papa! You got a new book! I want to read it!" I said, excitedly. Duke's books were always so entertaining to read, flawless and perfect. Duke smiled, kissing my hand again.
"Of course you will, angel. I have a special copy just for you."
"And my dad's been busy with Helen," said James from where he lay sprawled across the foot of my bed.
"Who's Helen?" I asked, in surprise. Duke and Danny didn't say anything but James had a hard expression on his face and Kyle couldn't look at me in the eyes. I frowned.
"Is she your girlfriend, Daddy?" I asked, curiously. That had to be the reason for them all to act so weird. "Because if she is, it's okay….I don't get why everyone's so…tensed…" I shrugged.
"Well…" started Kyle, rubbing his neck with his free hand.
"No. Helen is his new wife, my new step mom. Oh, and Katie is her daughter, my new step sister. She's a bitch," James said, easily. He ignored Kyle's stiff and angry pose.
My brows furrowed a little. "Jamie, don't be like that. Hey, when did you guys get married?" I asked, happily, squeezing Kyle's fingers in an attempt to calm him.
"Five months ago," he muttered. My face dropped.
"Oh." I muttered. Of course. I wouldn't remember that….I sighed and smiled brightly. "I want to meet her!"
All four men turned to look at me with disbelieving looks.
"You want to meet…her?" repeated Duke in a distant voice. Danny just stared at me, his mouth hanging open.
"You want to meet the witch and her bitch of a daughter?" asked James, raising an eyebrow. He glared coldly at his father. "Hear that, Dad? She wants to meet them. How…interesting."
"James, that's enough," Kyle gritted out, angrily. I stared at James with wide eyes.
"Jamie, don't say such bad things about them -"
"Why not? It's true, though. That woman is a complete witch who lets -" said James, completely ignoring us. Danny frowned a little, worry evident on his face.
"James, stop it, man," Danny muttered, coming over and sitting on the floor next to his father, resting his arms on my bed.
"-her daughter do whatever in the world she wants and then -" continued James, either completely ignoring us or seriously oblivious to us.
"James. Enough," Kyle said, looking more and more furious by the minute. He squeezed my hand tighter, making it numb.
"-when accidents happen, Helen sticks up for her daughter and blames it on dad. So, in the end, it's as though dad was the one who was -"
"James! I said, enough!" shouted Kyle, jumping to his feet and glaring at James. James shut up and glared right back.
Another similar feature: both of them had frightening tempers.
My hand was really starting to hurt with how hard Kyle was squeezing my hand. I winced.
"Um…my hand…" I whispered. My fingers were turning blue from the lack of blood…ouch….
"What? You know what I'm saying is true!" shot James, sitting up and glaring at his father. Kyle narrowed his eyes at him.
"One mistake, James. Forgive them!"
"Kyle, you're hurting her," said Duke gently. Kyle paused and looked down at our hands. He instantly let go and I cringed as the sting of blood flowed through my hand again.
"I'm sorry, Katrina…" he said, eyebrows furrowing. He stood still for a moment and then briefly turned, kissed my forehead and left the room. Without saying a word.
"James! Was that necessary?" I chastised, nursing my sore hand and glaring at James. He didn't answer but he met my eyes and then his dark eyes roamed my face.
