~ Prologue ~
"Wait! Kim! Wait for me!" I gasped, trying to catch up with my best friend who was streaking across the soccer field without a care in the world. Didn't she care she was going to get hurt? Turning, she grinned and waved at me.
"Hurry up, slowpoke!" she called, laughing. Upset at not being able to run fast enough, I got angry.
"Kim! I don't want to come!" I called, now walking slowly. I didn't want to run anymore, I was tired. I watched as her eyes darted around the field and then back to me with worry in her eyes.
"The boys are playing soccer here! Hurry up and come!" she screamed, waving her arms around frantically. I glanced around, only realizing that boys really were playing soccer. And I was in the middle of it.
Shrieking, I started to run when I was suddenly knocked over by something colliding with the back of my head, sending me falling to the ground.
"Oww…"I groaned, tears sprining to my eyes and starting to seep down my face.
"MIA!" shrieked Kim, running towards me.
"Are you okay?" asked someone from next to me. Glancing up, I saw a dark haired boy holding a ball with an anxious expression on his face. He held out his free hand to help me up and I took it.
Then he studied me.
"Your dress got dirty….I'm sorry. Even your face." He said, sounding worried. He turned and kicked the ball to his buddies.
"I'm not playing anymore!" he yelled at them before turning and taking my hand. "Here, I'll help you clean up."
"Mia, are you okay?" gasped Kim as she reached us. She looked from my dirty dress and face to my hand which the boy was holding and then to the boy before resting on my face again.
"I'm sorry I ran away from you like that." She whispered. I smiled at her. I wiped my tears away, trying to show her I was okay.
"It's okay. I just need to get cleaned up."
The boy and Kim helped me clean my face and wipe away smudges from my face. I smiled at the boy.
"You're welcome. I'm James. James Williams," he said, sticking his hand out. Grinning, I reached out and shook it.
"I'm Mia Jefferson and this is Kimberly Adams. She's my best friend," I said. James smiled at both of us in greeting.
After making sure that we were both okay, James darted off, back to the field.
We became friends soon after that and we became close. Of course, Kim was the only best friend for me. James was something else.
And that's when I realized that I liked James. I was in grade six when the crush had first started.
