My pink and white curly hair fell pass my shoulders and my tears hit the ground hard.  I was hiding in the basement from my step mother.  Today she did less damage then before but it still hurt.  My dad had died a few years ago and he left me with the abusive wife he married five years ago.  She only started hitting me a few years back and since her drinking became worse, the abuse got worse as well.  I have a younger step-brother who suffers the same abuse as I do but I can’t go near him or she’ll hurt him much more when she’s hitting him already. My little brother is all I have left to a real family.  It hurts to be down here and he huddled in his closet hiding from his mother.

“Oh Rainbow! Come and get your momma a drink please?” Devil screamed down at me.

I rushed up the basement stairs and into the kitchen.  I had to do what she said or she’ll attack me again.  I was scared to get hit again.  It isn’t the first time I almost lost my life to that devil but I can’t say I didn’t hit her back.  We always got into fist fights and I hated that I fought in front of Chase.  It’ll traumatize him as much as it did me.

“Here you go mom” I said and flinched when she lifted her hand.

“Thank you Rainbow, now go and get you and your brother ready for school” She said and I sprinted up stairs and hopped into my shower and took a nice hot shower.

I stepped out drying myself and examined my body to see all the scars and bruises she left on me.  They were fading already and the scars weren’t as noticeable as before.  I stepped out of my bathroom in my robe and I changed into purple skinny jeans and a pink V-neck long sleeve t-shirt.  I brushed out my hair and then put on my yellow socks and slipped on my blue converse.  I was nicknamed rainbow for a reason but my real name is Rayne Halley.

“Chase are you ready?” I asked him going to check on him in his room.

He was dressed in skinnies and long sleeve too; he was more of a vans person then converse.  He was four years younger than me.  Chase attended South Bridge Middle School and I attended South Bridge High School in an island west of Europe in the Atlantic Ocean called Le Mot Ile (le-moh-ileh).  It’s a French word for Island.

“Yes, is she knocked out?” He asked me shaking.

I ran up to him and hugged him tightly.

“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you Chase, always remember that” I told him and he nodded his head.

“Come one let’s go” I told him and he grabbed his bag and followed me down the stairs.

We walked silently down the stairs hoping not to wake the knocked out alcoholic slumping over her drink on the dining table.  We walked slowly out the front door and then we ran towards the bus stop across our house.

“Hey Rainbow, looking good today” one of my friends named Danny told me.

“Hey Chase, how you been bro?” Danny asked my brother.

“Hey Dan, been better, feeling a little under the weather today” Chase told him.

“Why didn’t you stay home?” Dan asked Chase then looked at me and shook his head.

“Never mind you’ll probably say the same thing your sister tells me when she’s feeling sick” Dan told Chase and Chase and I smiled.

“You know us so well” I told Danny and he laughed.

“Barely Rainbow” He said then Chase’s bus arrived.

“I’ll pick you up after school kay? Be good” I told Chase and he nodded his head and entered the bus.

“Bye Rainbow” Mr. Rodgers waved at me.  He was the bus driver.

I waved good bye and then I watched as the bus left and our bus pulled up.  I walked into the bus and Danny and his brother followed me.

“Good morning Rainbow, what’s the weather today?” Mr. Sam asked me and I laughed.

“Bright” I replied and he smiled at me.

“Always” he replied and I took my seat beside the brothers.

“Rain why are you always so colorful?” Brendon asked me.  He was Dan’s brother.

“Because my life is so black and white and all Chase has is me to brighten his life as well” I told Brendon.

“She uses that excuse all the time” Danny told his brother and I punched his arm.

“Well it’s true and you know that” I replied.

The bus stopped in front of another bus stop and then we were on our way to school.  When we got to the school we were stopped by the crowd of people blocking our entrance way because the “It girls” were making an announcement.  I pushed my way through the crowd and was stopped by Amy Lancer.

“Hey Rayne, I see you’re still trying to look pretty, maybe a plastic could help? I got connections if you’d like” She said and I laughed at her.

“That’s how you got uglier right? Well if you excuse me, I have a real life to live” I told her and pushed her aside then walked into the school.  Only to be stopped by the football team.

I swear these stuck ups are everywhere.

“Hey Rayne, how are you today?” the head of the football team, Chad Dylanns.

He tried to have sex with me freshmen year when he thought it was cool.

“Hey Chad, do you really care or are you and your friends looking for some entertainment? Please move or I’ll be late for my class” I told him but he stopped me.

“Rayne” He said in an apologetic tone.

“Don’t even Chad, just let me pass” I told him and pushed passed him and his friends.

I met up with my best friend Sage Anderson.  I told her everything besides the beatings my step mother did to me.

“Hey Rainbow, looking bright today” She said and I smiled.

“Hey Sage, let’s get to class” I said and we walked in sync to class.
