Gabrielle held onto her breath as she stayed under water to see how long she could hold her breath and she reached ten she couldn’t hold it any longer, breaking out into the surface she pushed back her wet hair and swim over to the edge of the pool.
“Gabby, Tristan just text me and guess what?” Her best friend, Lydia said excitedly.
“What?” Gabrielle mumbled.
“He asked me out and and and and we are going to a club for our first date.” Lydia jumped excitedly but one look at Gabrielle made her frown. “You are supposed to be happy for me.”
“I am.” Gabrielle sighed and lifted herself up to sit on the cement.
“Why aren’t you jumping with joy!” Lydia complained.
Gabrielle chuckled. “Why would I? It’s you who is going on the date. I’m still happy for you either way though.”
She smiled. “What should I wear? Oh my god! I need to find something to wear.” She started to panic as she grabbed her purse and pulled on a big shirt over her swimsuit. “I have to go. I will call you later. Bye Gabby.” She hugged Gabrielle quickly before running towards her car.
Gabrielle looked at her until she disappeared before sighing and turning back to the pool. Sometimes, she just needed a moment where she can stop time and just admire life the way it is.
The thought of just living and enjoying life or simply having fun made Gabrielle’s inside twist. She wanted it so badly it hurts. Everyday, she has to spend being a girl and following rules and now she feels like she’s slowly breaking away.
“Gabe!” Her brother Nick came running and charged at her pushing into the pool. When she came out he was smiling like a dimwit.
Her brother is older than her yes, by two years. He’s now twenty-four and a pain in the ass.
“Nick!” She splashed water at him.
“Sorry Gabe. I couldn’t resist.” He chuckled.
“What ever.” She lifted herself back up onto the edge of the cement. He sat next to her.
“What got you so down?” He asked.
He took off his shoes and dipped his toes into the pool waiting for her to answer. His little sister always have something naughty up her sleeves but he wasn’t sure if it was because of that or something else.
“Nothing.” She mumbled.
“Don’t lie. I could see it. Is it boy problems?”
She played with the water between her toes as she thought about telling him or not. She has always shared her secrets with her brother and he’s an honest man. He won’t tell a single word she asked him not to. It’s just as simple as that. She turned to look at him.
“No!” She exclaimed.
He smiled. “Fine, then what?”
She paused for a moment and gaze into the sparkling water and it glistened back as if telling them that this wasn’t going to be a good conversation.
“Nick, have you ever felt like…like you want to break free?” She asked.
He raised a dark eyebrow at her. “What do you mean?”
She sighed. “I want to feel excitement! I don’t want to be proper and prim like our mother. I want to see the world and have fun. I want to go ride a Ferris wheel…or ride a motorcycle…”
“Wow that’s dangerous…wayyy dangerous.” Her brother teased.
“Oh stop it!” She pushed him playfully. “You know what I mean I want to feel good and see the exciting dangerous stuff.”
“Oh…Gabe…I think you are treading on thin ice. You shouldn’t…mom would kill you.”
“Please Nick! Just this once…I want to feel alive….I can’t be like this or I’m going to be insane. I need to experience life.” She begged him.
“I can’t take you outside. Mom’s going to freak out and I’m going to be in big trouble. Plus, Harvey is going to come and see you today.” He said.
“Ok, I won’t do it today but please help me.” She begged him giving him the puppy eyes.
“Are you seriously going to do this?” He asked.
“Yes! I need to so bad or else I’m going to be insane and you don’t want an insane sister!” She cried out.
He laughed. “I think you are insane already but if you really sure about this I think it’s best if we dress you up as a boy to be safe. Mom would totally see you sneak out if you did.”
“Oh that’s a great idea!” She hugged her brother tightly. “I love you, Nick! I love you! Can we do this like tomorrow?!” Her eyes widened in excitement.
He laughed. “I think I’m going to die helping you but yes we can do it tomorrow.”
